Most people like the Ace 250, Fisher F2, if you want something with a little more gizmos, there are many more in a little higher of a price range, Fisher F5 Garrett GtaX, Whites Mxt, the list goes on and on.

Not sure there's are real answer to that question...

Sort of like asking "what is considered the best car?"

Could be lots of answers dependant on what your budget is, what you want to do, where you want to do it, etc.

Well that's a horse of a different color... but there are still too many variables to say which is best. The real question is which detector is best for you. Talk to some dealers, especially the ones who sponsor this forum. They'll help you determine the best suitable detector for you.

Where do you want to use it? Water? Land? Both?

If both I would go with the Minelab Excalibur... just land just about any high end detector would do but the Sovereign GT would be a good choice and its around $798. I don't own a Sovereign GT but I may down the road of life as it has alot of fans..

aaahhhhh! The infamous "what is the best detector question" There are many correct answers to this question. There are many wrong answers to this question. What determines this answer is not what the detector can do, but what you can do with the detector. Sorry if I sound a little like a Kung Foo episode but, what it comes down to is your willingness to devote yourself to learning the detector you choose. There are people on the forum that make fantastic finds with about every detector out there. You can improve your odds by choosing a higher end detector, but only if you apply yourself to how it works. There is no rule that says the good finds are deeper. So purchasing a more sensitive detector will get you deeper and more accurate at identifying your finds. That higher sensitivity and discrimination brings not only deeper finds but, a world of new sounds and anomalies that you have to understand. So there is a growth process of sorts. The best detector is the one you have the time to devote yourself to.

All that being said. The best detector is of coarse the DFX!

Keep Swing'in
Jack

Well since this thread is here and I've been considering upgrading...
I've been using a Bounty Hunter Tracker 4 for about a year, I've gotten good enough with it to get a good idea of what something is before I dig. I'm looking for something that would be mostly land used but sometimes in fresh water. Would also like it to have an "idiot" screen to help determine whats below ground rather than just a worthless needle that flops back and forth. Maybe in the $400-$800 price range? Anything over that it better do the digging for me.

I agree with CyberSage, except for when he says - All that being said. The best detector is of coarse the DFX! I think he mis spoke him self because the real answer is anything made by Tesoro . Like they others have said it depends on what you want to do with it & where you are going to use it, and most importantly what one will be the most "fun" to use for you because fun is what really counts. Steve.
