Default Detecting Electronics

Hello!

I have been looking for hours for a metal detector to use professionally in forensics/security applications and haven't been able to find anything that specifically mentioned the abilities I'm looking for.

I wish to be able to detect the Silver/Gold foils of writable optical media (CD-Rs, DVD±Rs, etc), the circuitry in USB flash disks, the platters or circuitry in removable hard disks, etc. - preferrably in the form of a handheld wand that could, for example detect a USB flash disk such as http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/super...ore/pqiX4.jpeg , stored inside a book, from about 1.5ft-3ft (50-100cm) away.

Googling seems to only find "security wands" for bomb/weapon detection and CD/DVD-based training videos on "treasure hunting" detectors, so I am at a loss what would be appropriate - even almost every link I've found has only mentioned the "treasure hunting" abilities. Although I assume that most detectors would be able to find the things I need to detect, I have no measure to judge how well they would do so, at which distances.

Can any of you recommend anything?

Cheers,

Beryl

Welcome to the forum.

That's a different sort of application. Are you worried about information leaving a building?

You need the 'portal' equipment such as the ones used in airports.... small detectors will not pick up those items at that range.... there may be some technology in development.. but I have not seen it yet.... all handheld units require close proximity.... RickO

He probably needs a walk-thru unit too.
