Default 1st Lake Hunt

I took my new Beach Hunter ID with the 12" coil out for a few hours in the lake I live on. The lake has been a local favorite spot since back in the 40's and is the only lake in the area for water sking so on the weekends it is packed, so I waited until Monday morning to go to school on this new detector. With sand scoop, mask and snoorkle in hand I loaded up in my jon boat and went to "The Point" where folks gather to get out in the water and drink beer and cool off. (they have to get there by boat) There is no public beach as it is a private lake so non- property owners use "the point". The water is from ankel deep to waist deep with sand and hard white clay below the sand. It was a great place to practice finding targets, pinpointing and using the scoop. I didn't break any records but I was well pleased with the detector, the new 12" coil " that doesn't float like a cork" and what I learned. I know one thing about the BHID, when the green light flashes and the tone is high, it IS a coin I didn't mean to be so long winded over a few coins and a lot of bottle caps but this is just so different from land hunting. I love it Good Luck to all, Jim

Jim those bottlecaps were all in water? I'd go back and keep cleaning out the trash and sooner or later you should hit something good.. once the finds hit the clay they will go no further down

hmmm, that is a lot of garbage, but it is sure to be promising once cleaned out. Do any of you water hunters ever use a magnet to pull some of the trash before running your machine over it?

My dad, when he was about 17 worked in a ship yard on the Texas gulf coast. He did any number of jobs from painting to scraping barnacles to simple repairs. Another thing he did was tool retrieval. Invariably, a few times a day someone would drop a tool into the 20-30 foot water. Now, many of these were expensive tools, but no one ever wanted to go in after them because as you might know shipyard water is pretty foul. The water was murky and there was nasty sludge at the bottom. But my dad would throw a magnet on a line and drag it over the bottom to get the tool. Often he would get $.50 or $1.00 for his trouble.

Long story, but this same method might be useful to preclean some trash from water sites you are interested in. They have these wonderful neodymium magnets these days. They are pretty much strong enough to suck a monkey wrench through a garden hose and no doubt would pull a lot of the ferrous material for you. They can be found at www.unitednuclear.com. The large ones have some incredible pull force (a 3" diameter x 2" thick cylinder will pull 535lbs). Just heed the warnings on these, they will break fingers or worse, and ruin electronic things. So for god's sake dont get one close to your machine

Oh and I am sorry if the magnet thing is heresy around here. But, I subscribe to the motto "work smarter, not harder"

Smile 1st Lake Hunt

Certainly not a bad start. Congratulations on your new machine and new way of hunting for "treasure". Wishing you the best on your future hunts.

Looks like a party spot with all those caps. Keep searching and I'm sure you will find some good stuff around that area.

Using a nice strong magnet wouldn't be a bad idea. We use the nail recovery tool to gather up all our spent shotgun shells after a long day of Skeet shooting.

As for neodymium, in one of my Physics classes in college, they have a really large one used to calibrate one of their SPECT machines that we used to do magnetic field readings with as a project. When we weren't learning, we would throw paper clips just far enough that you think it would just fly by and zoom, that paperclip would arch and hit the box that the magnet was in. I would suggest if you would go this route with a magnet to cover it in plasti-dip to give it a little big of give to make it easier to pull objects off.

Shawn, A magnet will not pick up the brass shotgun shell bottoms. Maybe the new ones are made of steel?

Ah, you do have a good point. I'll need to double check to see if they put some steel in them now for easier pick up. I know we mixed and matched various shotgun shell brands.

That magent idea would certainly limit the amount of bottlecaps you had to dig. Judging by the day you had, four brass shell heads wounldt be so bad if you didnt have to dig 30 or 40 bottlecaps!

Nice hunt, you'll probabaly see some silver come from that area in the future.

right, the idea would be just to thin it out some so that you dont spend soooo much time digging ferrous. maybe its cheating, i dunno. but i will tell you what, dont put your machine and a big neo magnet in the same boat. for that matter, dont carry a neo in one hand and your machine in another. and dont forget to take off your watch.

Not sure how old you are but you should avoid the magent idea if you have a pacemaker...

Looks like it was a fun day! I can't wait to try mine in the water. It has been cold this year so far..."Juneuary" in Seattle. Getting tired of the rain, need that sun to come out!

I didn't expect to find shotgun shells there but I knew I would find lots of bottle caps. I sit on my dock on the weekends and watch the party on the point, 5 or 6 boat loads of people all waist deep in the water with a bottle of Bud in hand. I am just using that spot for training before I hit the places that were public swimming areas years ago. I can't get back in the lake for at least a week as I had a skin cancer cut out yesterday and got 4 stiches to heal up Thanks to alll for the comments and I look forward to finding some good stuff this summer, Good Luck, Jim
