Default Upgrade to DFX

Hi everybody. I am looking ahead to upgrade my detector, mabey in a year or so. I have made up my mind that my next ( and probabaly last ) new detector will be a DFX. I have downloaded the manual for the White's DFX and I plan to study it pretty hard before I buy the machine. I would like to ask for any help or tips that other DFX users have learned that was not really covered in the manual. I want to be prepared for this workhorse machine so that I do not get confused and discouraged.

I also plan to buy the book, Digging Deeper, to gain some additional knowledge.

Thank you all in advance!

Why not just move all the way up and get an MXT!

Just kidding, the DFX just isn't for me. I have been trying other detectors for 6 years now and haven't found one yet that I would give up my MXT for. In two years these new discriminating PI's might be the ticket.

The DFX is a great machine, and is certainly versatile. You have said you are getting Jeff Foster's book, I would also recommend the site www.dfxonly.com where there are a bunch of great people (very much like here) dedicated to this machine and very, very helpful. RickO

Thanks, Rick. I do spend some time at the DFX forum, I think they may be a little biased but I have looked over their program section. They have some really nice programs by the sound of it.

Yes, perhaps a bit biased... I have found that most MD'rs are a bit biased toward their machine... only natural. However, if you visit several forums, you will see that the DFX is generally considered to be 'high end' and is certainly capable of a wide range of modifications for all applications. Good luck... I am sure you will find a machine you will be happy with.. RickO

Default Help from a 25 year old whites user.

Hi Pal:
So you plan on getting your hands on a DFX.I have mine 4 years and I have to say it is a charm to have.In between my 3 other units I find that "Omegano the great"(DFX) I like to fancy myself to nickname all my machines.Has a lot of credit but beware with tone ID on it is a big challenge and the very first year or so it may drive you nuts and up a wall if you don't give your self that mental training to bypass the wild amount of sounds coming thru or better to categorize with your common sense what sounds are telling you this or the other.I personally have mentaly blocked the trash beeps and can now enjoy and recover more with the tone id on.I allso find the icons a blessings I don't pay much attention to the number or the bars.I find the preset programs an enormous help I had not found the need to venture past the coin,coin/jewelry or jewelry/beach although I have made my vesion of an exquisid coin program to blow away the mayor trouble new tabs that pester me so much at the beach.I had it replaced over the demo program. All the rest of the erasable programs I have left as they were. When you finally purchase it and get it you can send me pm's if you get stuck along the line if I have fumbled in that area I can probably get you going in the right direction.Hope this will not deception you and instead give you confidence in the DFX he is just a wild one that need people with valor to learn his language.Good hunting Ralph.

Default More DFX Questions...

Thanks for all the input so far. I have a few questions as I sit here. I have never used any machine besides the ACE 250, so I really dont have any comparisons between metal detectors. Pardon my ignorance.

Have any of you used the ACE before going to the DFX? Is the DFX a "chatty" machine? I saw that Lizard mentioned something about the tone ID, is that a feature that can be turned on and off? Does that mean that you can hunt without sound and using only the visual VDI display?

I see alot of people talking about the "Deep Silver Program" on DFXonly.com, can someone give me an idea of how deep this program can produce dime size finds?

Thank you!

The dfx has factory programs which can be very simple, to the eeprom programs. The dfx is also programmable so you can choose if you want it to be :"chatty"...I guess you mean responsive to most targets like all metal mode...or you could make it as simple as just finding quarters! So this is a machine that can be set up any way you want. As a beginner the factory programs are ok...put some hours in and then start making basic changes to sensitivity and pag. Usually most programs will work with gain at 3 and ac sens in 70's...sometimes higher...you will need to test in your soil conditions...but you better learn first before you play around.

First time I turned on tone id, I found a gold ring....now always use on dfx and my Se...

Tone id is on in some programs and off in others... You can turn it on or off in any program you want... I prefer it on...gives clear different distinct sounds for each coin.

How deep? That is open for debate... your average finds will be 0 to 4 inches... I would say 8 to 10 inches is possible...how deep you want to dig? Larger objects/some relics I would say a foot.

Thanks, Greg. I guess I am thinking that I should be able to reliably find dimes at 8 inches with the DFX (Once I learn the machine, of course) Is that unrealistic?

If you take the time to learn the dfx and use it, I can tell you you will be rewarded. Soil conditions seem to play a major roll in depth readings. Around here with both my Se and dfx 8 inches is possible....but seems 90% of my finds are between 0 and 4 inches with both...
