I was researching something else and found this info. I've never seen anything like it before. Has anyone here on the forum ever found one?
It might account for some old coins that can't be identified. http://www.kenbarr.com/lovetokens.html __________________ |

I just caught a blurb in one of the tresure magazines. Many of you probably already know this. Still I thought I'd share with new folks. I apologize for not being able to quote the exact source. I'll look it up this evening.
Anyway, it's said that love tokens were popular in the late 19th century. They were often created from worn coins. A man would send to a women that caught his eye. If she was pleased with his adoration, she would retain the token. If she didn't care for his declaration of affection, she would bend the coin/token and disgard it. To give proper credit, I will cite author and publication this evening. |

I have one, not a detecting find though. My Dad found this one years ago in the basement of a house he had just bought. He kept it for a few years and passd it on to me. It's an 1853 half-dime, and it's one of my favorites, the artwork in just exquisite. Thanks for bringing them up Aridice53!

Love tokens in England often took the form of a hammered silver coin, bent into an "S" shape. I've never found one myself, but have seen one or two.
