With iron at one end of the scale and silver at the other I believe it is quite simple to detect only those metals. In fact you can set up any detector with full range discrimination to do it. But as all beach hunters know gold can fall anywhere in between iron and silver depending on size and purity. Finding JUST gold at any VDI number does not sound feasible.

I'm still waiting for a machine that can tell the difference between a pull tab and a gold ring.... Doesn't exist yet as far as i know...
