Talking Garrett's customer service is great! My ace was broke

I bought my Ace 250 in January and I used it quite a bit with absolutely no problems.... I haven't used it for a few weeks and I knew that I needed new batteries. I put new batteries in and headed out to my back yard. I know by using the ace so much that you can nearly always get some noises from junk hits, but as I made my way across the yard I heard nothing. Though it to be odd, so I ran my metal digger across the coil w/ all metal setting on...Nothing! I feel like I lost a pet. Has anyone else had this happen to them, and does anyone have any advice or experiences with dealing with Garrett? thanks.

Try holding on the power button until you hear it beep, that will reset it and hopefully restore it. If that doesn't help take the batteries out and put them back in. Sometimes mine goes crazy and I can't shut it off, I take the batteries out put them back in and am good to go again.
One more thing check the connection at the top to make sure it is clean and tight

I assume you tried it without using headphones? If you are using headphones, unplug them and see if they are the problem. BTW - the headphones do have to be set to stereo for the Ace.

No the display is functioning fine... no target id though. I will try the holding the power button... I did that, but must not have held it long enough, because I heard no beep. I don't use headphones yet. This was just so wierd because it was working fine, I had it in the house for a couple of weeks without any use and then this happens. Thanks for the input thus far.

Give Garrett a call, they have great customer service.

My ACE 250 was almost out of warranty when I had a problem. I thought for sure it was a bad coil. I called Garrett explained my problem and they sent me a replacement coil. I put the new coil on, tried it around my yard for about 15 minutes and it seemed to work fine.

The next time I went to use it it wouldn't work at all, so this time I sent it back to Garrett.

Got it back and it was the same story again. I tried it, it worked fine, then the next time I tried it, it just went crazy, then other times it wouldn't work at all.

I called Garrett again. The lady told me to send it back, and to save on shipping costs this time to only send back the control assy.

Garrett sent me a brand new detector, with a 2year warranty, plus they sent me $30. worth of Garrett Treasure hunting books for my inconvenience.

So far the new detector works fine. My wife uses it now. I asked her if she wanted to go metal detecting. She watched the Garrett video, and I explained how to pinpoint. We went to a farm I hunt, gave her a trowel, and off she went.
Within 5 minutes she dug her very first find, a 1903 Indian Head penny!

I'm embarassed to say I found nothing that day lol

Does the machine make any noises at all? Beep when you turn it on, etc.? Maybe the connections to the speaker are loose.

yeah, it beeps when I turn it on, slight sound but not reactive sound when pinpointer is pushed. All the normal stuff happens when I turn it on... I notice a small flicker above one of the notches, but it doesn't mark a notch for any metal, I get no sound near metal, and no reaction to pinpointer on metal.

OZ IL..........Re your above comment (highlighted in red), this caught my attention. Are you inferring that the Ace 250 will not work with mono type headphones ? Please explain.

Thanks.......Todd

Default My ace is off to Garrett

Well I finally sent my Ace off to Garrett on Friday 11/9/07. It should arrive at Garrett on Wednesday. I haven't called them or anything, I just placed the information printout they require on the website along with it. It cost me $12.00 to send it back. Even though this has happened to my Ace, I would still never disuade anyone from getting one. It's a great machine and you would pay 100 more for another detector with the same options. My brother just spend $200 for a white's prism2, and I would truly rather have my Ace250. The white's is a nice machine, but mine has more bells and whistles. I've heard too many good things about the customer service at garrett to disuade me. We will see what transpires in the coming weeks... and I'll keep you posted.

Oh and another thing. I also have a bounty hunter... that incidentally died at the same time... so I was detectorless for about a month. I noticed with it that it was registering on my display, but no sounds. So I went to wallyworld and purchased a nice set of stereo headphones and waaalaaa it works with the headphones... so I tried it with my Ace before I sent it back....no luck. But, at least I got something to use... but I really miss my Ace250.

Both died at the same time? You didn't have a thunderstorm with a nearby lightning strike, did you?

Thumbs up Garrett's customer service is great!

Well, my detector got to Garrett last wednesday, they emailed me to let me know that they had received it. On Thursday, they emailed me back that it was repaired and that it was being taken to shipping and I should receive it back by this coming wednesday. This has been a total turn around of 12 days. I had to pay $12 for the shipping to Garrett, but they covered the cost of shipping it back to me. Garrett has been great to work with and I highly recommend using their products. It's nice to see a company that is diligent about getting things back to you and keeps you informed of the progress along the way.

Other things that could effect the operation of detectors are motor/electrical lines and source's like that. Hunted with a friend of mine in Maine the other week and if he got within' like 30' of me with my White's 6000 Di Pro my detector would go off the wall=Had to shut 1 machine off if we was going to show the other something. I think he said his detector was going whack-O at the same time. Must be on the same frequency or close to it...

You might try taking the batteries out and checking the contacts. This happened to me once. The little metal spring contact was installed slightly askew so I had to mess with it and clean the contact. Then it started working again. If that doesn't work you'll have to send it in to Garrett. Make sure your batteries are not out of date.

Regards
