I found these rings in the last week or so. One is a class ring with the date 1928 on it. Found it at the school. Any idea what it is made of? White gold? Platinum? Silver? Been there for almost 80 years and is in very good condition. I don't think I'd be able to find an owner.
Also found these others. One says .925 on it...I assume this means silver? The other I would assume to be silver as well. can't imagine how anything non precious could survive in the dirt this well. Didn't realize I cannot take pictures of closeups. My camera barely takes one of 10 non blurry photos...not sure why. HH what a hobby |

that 28 is most likely silver if it looks silver. in 28 white gold was rare and plat was even more rare.

Nice rings.
Look for a setting on your camera that looks like a flower - that's for taking close-ups. If it has a flash, make sure it's turned on. If you have a tripod, use it, otherwise, put the camera on a very stable surface. Press the trigger half-way down and let the camera adjust itself. Then press it the rest of the way (without jerking) and take the shot. You may need to experiment a few times before you know how close you can get the lens to the object. Actually, the pictures you took are pretty good. You didn't use a flash, so the camera kept the lens open a long time to get a decent exposure. They're a little fuzzy, but exceptional under that situation. HH Rich __________________ |

Thanks billiard. I do see the rose and will attempt to make an improvement. The flash always seems to be problematic as the flat surface of a coin or ring reflects so much that you cannot see the detail.

If you try to shoot from a 90 degree angle, all the light will reflect back at you. But if you try it from a 45 degree angle, most of the light will bounce away. Shadows will be more extreme, and when you're 5 inches away, you can sometimes pick-up fine details like the date. It always takes me about 10 shots until I finally get the distance and angle right. Most of the time I just shoot 15 or 20 shots from various angles and distances and then load them into the computer. If I'm lucky, I'll find 1 shot I like.

I don't bother with lights reflectors etc. Use the macro mode ( the rose, flower) turn off the flash and shoot the pictures outside. I never get a good picture with the macro and flash. Rob

Sounds like the best solution yet.
