Ok I'm looking at purchasing a new detector for the beach. I have been using my X-TERRA 505 at the beach and do pretty good, but I'm afraid of it getting ruined due to the water splashing or something else. I have been talking to a sponsor on buying an AT-PRO and trading my 505 in. But I would like to keep my 505 because it does pretty good on dry sand(well pretty good in the water too since I found a 70 gram silver necklace). So I have been thinking of buying a dedicated water machine? Is that a good idea or should I go with the At-Pro? And if I go with getting a dedicated water detector what is a good one to purchase. I'm looking at used since some of the machines I just can't afford. The detectors that I have been looking at are Sand Shark,Sea hunter II,Surfmaster,Dual Field. Any others that may be good that I didn't include? Any help would be great.

Well first I think that a dedicated water machine is a good idea. Now just remember that you will need a scoop as well.. (don't know if you have one already).
Now many of the machines you posted are PI machines, that are compleately different than a VLF MD. They don't have discrimination and they pick up everything even at great depth. Now a solution would be getting a VLF or Multi frequency machine that would work well on the beach. I have a Detectorpro wader and it can be used is salt water with decent performance, and it has discrimination, this can be found in the classifieds or ebay pretty cheap if bought used. Now a MF (Multi frequency) would be even better. Options are Fisher CZ20/21 or the excalibur, Now prices range from the $300+ for a used CZ20 to 1000 for a excal. __________________ |
