Default I saw a guy at a park, in a nearby city. He was tearing it up, by digging big holes.

I saw him at the park, and he had a gigantic shovel, and was digging holes as big as your hand, if not bigger. He didn't fill in his holes, he found something that he is dug up, he told me he was going to sell it, and he will find more stuff to sell so he can get rich. I fussed at him, I told him you should of filled your holes, and this hobby is for fun, not for getting rich, al lthe time he punched me in the face for saying that, and broke my detector, and stole my pinpointer. Luckily it was a bad area, and everything I had was cheap. I don't even think about bringing a nice detector to a bad area, or my 200 dollar pin pointer lol I filled in the holes, pretty well, to the point where it looks like he didn't mess it up. So the park should be open to detecting still in the future. Thank god my retainers ,weren't in my mouth. I hate people that thinks they can grab a shovel ,and a detector, and go to a park, and thinks everything in the ground is valuable. don't you? I am sure you hate it when people doesn't fill in their holes too. I was trying to be a good responsible detectorist, but I got whacked for it. It won't stop me though, Most people I have talked too, knows better then to not leave un filled holes. This guy was just a one time deal, hopefully.

OMG !!Go to the police with a description of this assailant and his car. Remember the who, what ,where, when and why and make a report then file assault charges. In fact aggravated assault charges he had a shovel.

I don't care where you are at you can not allow anyone to put their hands on you.

Wow.......I'm speechless thinking about what I would like to do to that guy!

I left that part out on accident. I did, the police arrived shortly after he punched me. He was still there when he the police came and arrested him. He is facing criminal charges. The police told me he will be charged with theft, aggravated assault, and destruction of city property, and somebody elses property. Thank goodness.

Technically the jerk/guy could be arrested or at the very least cited for damaging/destroying city/state property, IMHO. It's people like that who get responsible MDers banned from many public parks/areas. Sad indeed. Hope you weren't injured too badly! I would have called the police and had him arrested for assault and battery too. People HAVE to realize they can NOT just get away with doing whatever they want to do.

Outstanding!Get a copy of the charges and the reports from the police department in the morning of this incident .This idiot could hurt someone else. Follow through now with receipts of you equipment. Go to the doctors office and get checked out,ect...

Write down now while it's fresh in your mind what happened.

Sorry, my last post/response to your initial post came a little late, I see. Glad that you had the guy apprehended and that he is indeed behind bars.

You know on this subject. Do not confront anyone doing anything unless someone is getting hurt. Make a note take pics and write tag numbers down then call or email the police department with the info gathered.

This is the only authorized way of handling non life threatening incidents if you are not law enforcement. I know you guys want to protect your hobby and mean well.

This incident could of went bad. Hello mike could of got his head knocked off with a shovel. Another angle an easier one for the police would be to arrest both guys for fighting. Let the judge sort it out..

You have come a long way Grasshopper. I remember last year you were asking permission to detect in public parks where the rules already allowed detecting now you are standing up for the hobby. WTG!

Yep. Mike, are you trying to become the next Zimmerman? I would not have approached a thug, and scolded him. I would have filled in his holes without bothering him at all. I shy away from confrontation when I am somewhere like that, I keep distance from anyone I do not know. Enough distance where I could get to a group of witness before I was attacked. Whether this means running toward a street full of cars, or toward a crowd, either will stop the assailant in their tracks. They don't want witnesses.

That guy had some nerve to pop you in the face, steal and stay in the park. There is no way the guy is going to have the patience to do what we do! Part of his frustration was probably from the junk he was digging. He would have given up the hobby in days if not minutes, anyway!

He probably got a BH from the thriftstore and thought he could do what you were doing and find a bunch of gold chains.

He will learn, and so will you, Grasshopper.

i had some kids try to take my detector..... i saw a cop in the lot watching thew whole thing.... I was heading for the woods so i had my medium shovel with me. Right as the kid grab my machine i cracked him in the shin and the cop lit it up.... he came over , the kid said did you see him assault me? The cop said no i saw you try to steal his metal detector. Cuffed the 2 kids and told me to have a good day, he had it all on dash cam. Im still waiting for them to release the video to me.,.... I assure you i will be posting it. Man what a wonderful DING noise it made. P.S. I knew the cop friends with him.

I use a shovel everywhere I detect.. Never have had 1 complaint nor dug any holes that are any larger or any more obvious than a hand cut plug... Actually I see it less noticeable than a hand cut plug..My Raven shovel will cut a perfectly clean round plug that drops right back in place, I see no problem with a shovel.. If it were a problem I wouldn't use it..Nor have any parks officials I have talked to had a problem or mentioned it..
PS: I always dig a hole large enough to get my hand in though......

Surprises me he would do such a thing with witnesses and stay in the park knowing you would report it, and the police would certainly be coming for him..Amazingly stupid on his part..
What town did this happen in???
You should post the police report..
I hope you got a copy after pressing charges... Glad it didn't cost you your life and that you're OK....

Glad its working out for you....the guy deserved to be locked up.....things would have gone down a little different if it were me tho.....no disrespect intended to Sgt. Wilkes.....but ive lost a lot of faith in the cops in my town.....had some property stolen from me a while back ...had all the paperwork on it and the cops still let the crooks keep my property......IF..the cops do there job..what Sgt. Wilkes told you to do is the way it should work....but in my case...next time we're going with my idea....

His Wrongs-
1- He should not have put hands on you. Period.
2- He should have filled the holes.

Your Wrongs-
1-"Fussing at him", Starting a conversation and then working toward suggesting he should fill his holes afterwards so you all can continue to detect the area would have been a smarter move. Suggest a better tool or technique.. Just because one person isn't doing things another persons way doesn't give you the right to chew them out...
2-Everyone has different reasons for doing things. If he wants to try and get rich metal detecting.. best of luck to him. Think of it like baseball, some people do it for a hobby, some people do it to try and make money. Whichever path they chose, they have the right to do so.

Not defending him, he got what he deserved sounds like.. Be careful who you confront tho.. People now-a-days are crazy. Dumb guy just wanted to get rich, now hes in the red on clad for 5 years to make up for the bail $
