Your detector will pinpoint a coin a couple inches off center if its on an angle in the ground. Try it in air tests and you will see. The further away from the coil the worse the effect. This is where a pinpointer really excels.

In addition it will cut the time spent looking for the targets by minimum of 50%. That equates to twice as many targets for the same time spent in the field. Seems like a win-win to me.

It will reduce plug damage by 99%.

Statistics are 78% made up.

I own three different pinpointers, any one of which does what it was made to do, and save time sifting through the dirt. You really don't need to spend $127.50, to get the job done, with reasonable ease. If your one and only hobby and interest, is metal detecting, your in a big hurry to score big, in some sort of competition where every second counts, you need the Professional tool, otherwise, like the choir states, repeatedly, you are just wasting your time hunting, might as well just stay home, and do nothing.

For those of us, who do this, purely for recreation, to relax, have a little fun and adventure, the Propointer isn't really a must have. We are going to have fun, regardless. We aren't driven to collect enough treasure to pay for our toys, or just keep with credit card payments, used to buy the equipment. I have quite a few other hobbies and interest, so my free time get divided. Don't always get to go hunting, have to wait on the weather a lot here in Florida. The heat and humidity, just takes away a lot of the fun for me. The winter months are is my prime hunting season, no snow, little rain, low humidity, seldom anywhere near freezing.

My point is that the ProPointer isn't a magic wand, it's a tool. You can learn to pinpoint fairly accurately with you detector, scanning a target from different direction, mentally noting where on the ground you get the strongest response, as the coil passes. I do this, until I've pretty much found the spot, immediately mark it (yellow plastic stake). I also have a pretty good idea about how deep I'm going to need, before I even start to recover. Only an inch or two, don't even bother with a plug, or even the pinpointer, just a little slit to slip two fingers into the ground.

The best part about the Propointer, is it's just a single button, push on, ready to go, push off, when you are done with it. The other two I have, you need to manually adjust the sensitivity threshold, pretty much every time, since it changes with battery drain. The HF isn't too bad for this, and only needs to be checked and adjusted periodically. The BH has the power switch integrated to the sensitivity adjust knob, each time you use it, you need to adjust it. Inconvenient, but doesn't make them totally useless.

A pinpointer, is certainly a nice tool, and a big help in a hole, but it's not manditory that you have the best money can buy. Getting out hunting, is never a waste of time. Many people have recovered targets, with no pinpointer at all. The comments about can't/won't hunt without The magically Propointer, seem really absurd to me. I've got a Propointer, but if it were lost, stolen, or my dog ate it, I wouldn't miss a hunting opportunity over it, or sit around waiting for a replacement. I'd be more upset over the loss of $127.50, and the additional cost to replace, which I probably wouldn't. It would have to actually pull the targets out of the ground, besides beeping and vibrating near them. It's got the brand name, and the 'cool' gadget appeal, but I'm fine wearing simple $20 shoes, which I don't worry about getting wet or dirty...

There is a good reason why everyone can't live without the ProPointer. compared to other PPers the range and the proximity alerting capability is unmatched.

The detector is your ears and the pro pointer is your eyes.
Also, it's kinda hard to get your coil into a 4 inch wide 6 inch deep hole to zero in on the target.
Definitely get the pro pointer. You will never leave home without it unless you are not going detecting that day.

Not to go over board on the pros and cons of pin pointers. But recently I found an old pocket watch. It was missing some of its brass gears. I knew they had to be in the same hole. I put a piles of dirt in my hand and used the pro point to find the little buggers. Without a pin pointer, it would have been impossible to do this. As good as my detector is, it just can't accurately pin point a tiny object down to a an 8th or 16th or 32nd of an inch. No detector is that good.
And in general, the time you save with a good pin pointer is worth the money. You will be quickly moving to new targets instead of bending over a hole wondering "where it is."

Default Cut him some slack

C'mon, cut the guy some slack. You can see that he is a new user. He may not know how to search this forum. And being a new user, how would he know that this subject has been discussed many times before? So what! Lots of subjects are discussed lots of time. What I have noticed is that everytime a previously discussed article is brought up again, something new is always added.

nice job ramer, some guys can do a search but what the heck, all I can say is the garrett is the most critical component of all my metal detecting repertoire. If it breaks while hunting - that would be it until a new one came in the mail.

My GPP arrived on Saturday and I took it out Sunday. Wow, what a great tool. Where I dug plugs (outside of park and in sandy areas), it was an immense improvement over the HF pinpointer. The proximity ability really made the difference. For coinshooting in the park, about 50% of the time it picked up the coins just under the surface before I even dug, so was able to just pop them with the probe. Previously I'd have to repeatedly jam my probe in the ground to find the target. For those targets that were deeper than the PP could detect without probing, I still had to use my previous method of probing and locating. I can honestly say I have zero buyers remorse on this one.
I stand by my previous post. Do you need it? NO. Is it a really helpful tool? YES!
FWIW.

I love mine and I feel like it saves so much time. If I lose mine or it quits I will be buying another.

Well said JB. Just got mine last thursday, blowed me away, thinking of ordering another one, simply because it makes metal detecting more fun, faster recovery, easier on the back and I would not enjoy it as much without one...I'm on the bandwagon...
