i x mine out with my derecter and only cut a 3-4in round plug, if not in plug then i stick the gpp in hole, sometimes its a lil bit further down or in side, i lay the extra dirt on a bandanna and use the pp and find it right away. the bandana makes it easy on small objects plus its easy to dump the loose dirt back in hole, after checking hole for more coins of course. Also when my machine tells me its an inch or two down i scan surface with gpp and with icepic pop the coin out no plug needed.....cliff.

There should be a "Frequently Asked Questions" section on this forum.
This is one of the top questions asked at least a couple times a week!

If you do a search for your question, you will find several pages of threads with the same question. They all lead to the same answer:
Get the Garrett Pro pinpointer.

I think it depends on the type of hunting you do. If you dig plugs, then I think a handheld can really be an asset saving you time and frustration. I don't don't have a PI detector, but have used them. With my BH Trk IV, I can get within a 2" radius of the target using the X technique and a little better with a PI unit. What you can't do is stick your detectors coil in the hole, so that is where the handheld really pays off. If you coinshoot without digging plugs, then the handheld can still help tell you if the target is more than a couple inches under the surface and further pinpoint those targets that are shallow before you probe.
I don't dig a lot of plugs, but still have gotten my $ worth out of my centech pinpointer. I actually just broke down and ordered a GPP, so looking forward to trying it out.
Short answer: Do you really need one, NO. Can they be a very useful tool, YES.

That's because they think they know everything, they must think that the handheld pinpointer is some kind of gimmick, and they think that the pinpoint in the detector is just as good -- same thing right? No, not right...
Shows their ignorance if you ask me....

The GPP is great for finding the things in the hole, some detectors can be fooled into thinking things are deeper or shallower then they are, sometimes the find is in the plug and a simple push into the plug can find it, and sometimes the pinpointer on the larger coils isnt as accurate as the smaller coils so you can have a 4" to 6" radious and the GPP stops you from even diging with those just below surface finds or surface but under the grass or leaves finds, also its great for second scanning for all those spills, nothing worse then standing up again and again to rescan and find another hit a couple of inches away.

I spend one hapy hour finding 30 pennies and a dime and quarter in a small 3' by 3' area which my back would never have held out on and most of those finds were just below the surface spill..the gpp worked wonders there

Anyone that says not to, or "just use the pinpoint in your detector" have not used the garrett pro-pointer...

The GPP is a great item. I have one and like it very much... BUT having used the HF pinpointer as well I can tell you that for starters that PP works good as well, might not be a garret, might not have the same performance, but it costs about 1/8 of the garrett, and it's a good starting point.

Default Loud & clear

I dug hundreds of big holes looking for coins.
I left coins in the ground because I couldn't find them.
I'm not the only one.

Somebody let me try theirs for one hunt and I immediately ordered one.
if you buy one and don't love it, I will buy it from you as a backup!!!

Here's some more of those threads I was telling you about with the same question as yours.

Here is a Youtube Video on how easily it finds targets:

Oh by the way: If the question comes up about the best digging tool.
Once again, all threads will lead you to the same answer:
It's the Lesche™ Digging Tool

I can see the man being apprehensive about buying something so expensive.
Sometimes people just want the extra security of talking to a person rather than reading someone else's posts.
And if he asked about a digging tool, I would recommend the ames tru temper digger, I bought mine at lowes on clearance for $9.

Even if someone doesn't like to read someone elses post it is true that this question was made and answered hundreds of times before, in this and other forums as well.
I usually use the search engine before I start a post on a matter that has been discussed many times.
Now this doesn't meand I wont answer a question if I can, helping someone is all what being in a forum is about.

I agree with Ace350. I'd have to say that a good 95+% of ALL the forum members that have a GPP are VERY SATISFIED with it. I would even go as high as 98%. The 2percenters or those people who argue against... well, THAT is ultimately YOUR choice if you think you are going to be in that 2% range that don't care for the GPP. It's like this, you either wipe your -ss or you don't. THAT'S what it comes down to. HH \_
