Cool Life Span of Rechargeable Batteries ?

I began using nickel metal hydrate rechargeable batteries last Aug. and have probably recharged the set about 75 times ; of course the time they hold each charge during use has shortened considerably ...I was wondering what the life span on this type of battery is....I'm currently just using the set as a back up....thanks, Roadrunner

The life span should be 500-1000 charge cycles. You may want to try conditioning the batteries. This can be done with a good-quality charger, or can be done manually if you are careful and know what you are doing. Basically, you discharge the batteries, then recharge them through a few cycles. It will usually restore the batteries to their full capacity.

I used to use an old automotive blinker light bulb to discharge my batteries. I soldered a couple of alligator clips to the bulb and connect them to the contacts on my batteries. It discharges them all the way so you can get a full recharge each time.

I'd be careful about discharging NiMH cells too much, though. If you discharge NiMH cells all the way, you run the risk of having a reversed cell. You should monitor the voltage and stop the discharge once the voltage reaches one volt per cell. A reversed cell can often be fixed, but it is best to not let it happen in the first place.
