I am going to say the Delta 4000, but that is just my opinion from my own use. Others will say whatever they use and have had great luck with. It is hard to find a "bad" detector for 400 dollars. Most of the major brands have great machines in that price range. I would suggest looking up videos on youtube about certain machines in that price range. Good luck.

Beep and dig go with a Tesoro Cibola. VID unit go with a Teknetics Delta 4000
Both are very good units under 400.00

There's a xterra 505 in the classified section for exactly that much.

If I were to buy new, I would say the Bounty Hunter Platinum is a bargain at $299.95

It is closely related to the Teknetics Gamma 6000 and has something the other detectors mentioned don't, ground balance.

Buying a used detector opens up a lot more possibilities, you can buy some great detectors for $400.

I have gave that a thought also. I like the F2 with the 11" DD coil from Kellyco for $300. Then I will have some cash for headphones, a hf pinpointer for now, and a lesche digger. Or just get the F4. Not completely sure yet.

I'd say an Ace 250($212), a Garrett Propointer($127), and a nice set of headphones(Garrett "master sound" $25) add that up and you have $364 and some room to get a good digger tool.
There is a reason the Ace 250 is the best selling metal detector. And you can always upgrade to the 8.5" x 11" DD coil later on (if you need or want the DD coil)...

Bounty hunter platinum all the way. No better detector for the price.

I'd skip the 11" and go for the 4" sniper coil combo and the pro pointer

nothing beats that pointer. I have 2 Fisher Pointers and while they work well for what they cost (free with the combo), I think every trip how much faster I'd be with a pro pointer

Like Gib mentioned, ground balance. Spending $400 on an upgrade and getting a detector without manual or automatic ground balance is silly.
Minelab Xterra 305 is another option with manual ground balance, plus Minelab's beloved fancy and helpful tones.

It pays to get the best you can afford. You can stick with an $18 Harbor Freight pinpointer, or find a used pinpointer until you raise the cash for a ProPointer, just my 2 cents. If you buy a Minelab from New England Detectors (forum sponsor) should include the 5 year warranty, but talk to a NED person for details.

Buy used and get a unit with ground balance. I ve bought used on the forums several times and have been happy with the trans actions. Usually got extras also.
