Default Gps question?

Does anyone use GPS on their phone to locate positions in the field?
I use historic aerial maps to find old homes, etc. When I find the Lat Long. Coordinates on the map I put them into the gps system in my phone and try to mark it and it takes me above Canada!?!?
Do any of you have an app that you downloaded into your phone that is easy to use or that you can just punch a waypoint into it and you can follow it to your site. HELP! Does anyone have any suggestions. What do you use?
I want to just punch in a position that I get off a map into the GPS App and follow it. I go deep into woods often and there are typically no landmarks. I really need this to be more successful in my hunts. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Steve

above Canada?? at least it's not putting you into MY turf!!

i do have the GPS in my phone, but to tell you truthfully, i've never really used it to any great extent. i've used the road map features a bit but that's about all i've done with it.
i guess that's not much help to you.

Pete

I tried to use my gps feature on my phone but the maps require cell phone service. I have a regular GPS that I will be bringing from now on. No worries about cell service and data usage.

if you do not know the "map datum' used by the source, and then use the same datum on your device it can be off by quite a bit,,,, but I would not think THAT far off, not knowing where you where trying to go when it put you over Canada,,, hard to say fur sure,,,, are you using the same coordinate format ? like degree/min/sec, or degrees/decimal min, etc etc ,,,,,,,,,

That's probly where the the discrepancy lies... makes sure whatever format you're inputting is the format accepted by the device. Ive taken coordinates and made the same mistake many of times until I figured out the device wants the coordinates entered a certain way.

And yeah, knowing the datum is key

Can't help otherwise... If I need a GPS, I use a GPS, since my phones "GPS" is just triangulated cell sources.

I have a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx that I use for finding coordinates from websites like the Historic Aerials one. Most websites give you coordinates in degrees, you have to convert them to Degrees/Minutes/Seconds for a lot of GPS units.

Luckily, the FCC has a great little website that will do just that for you!

Good luck and HH!
