Default Odd Snap Gromets

Hello All. Found these gromet snap pieces at a school built in the early 1900's. They still have what looks like leather attached to their backsides. We have found many buttons, gromets, and snaps but I have never seen any like these.

I thought maybe they were used on shoes or lace-up boots but they look too big around for that. Any ideas? Thanks and good luck. C9
