Does it come apart and if so, what does it look like on the inside. Maybe a key case.

It definitely has a seam, and that paint wouldn't last very long in the ground, so it's a recent drop and isn't likely to be internally rusted. Can you twist the 2 halves out of alignment in any way?

The construction reeks of having a mechanical function, and now I'm as curious as you are!

Are there any pin mounts on the bottom? My guess is part of a decorative pin or a cover cap for something. Fairly unusual.

I got to thinking at one point that the "dark end-red end" coloring made it look like a compass needle on steroids...

It's interesting that it tapers to an edge all around. Makes me think of a shim or wedge of some kind...but why would a wedge or a shim need such coloring?

This is a real brainbuster!

ADD:

Hmmm...I was just looking carefully at one of your pics, and what I earlier called a "seam" looks like it may be the edge of the red paint. A sharply delineated, very THICK coat of red paint. Maybe akin to the type of paint they use to mark highways (which is almost invariably white or yellow).

Regardless of what it turns out to be, I'd love to have a handful of them when I go to a lake. I'll bet I could easily skip those suckers 50' or more across the surface!

Pill case? Does it open? looks like the white side fits into the red side. At any rate, I would bet it used to open and hold something. Since it looks like a pill capsule, that may be a clue to what it used to hold.
