Default not just a rock...

I went to the river Monday...hands hurt so no detecting but I found this prehistoric hand hammer or maul while cruising the banks...I've found a few stone tools in this area, but nothing this big...an anthropologist friend checked it out and he is sure its one too! made my week!

Awesome eye find!!
My brother scouts crops during the summer and most of the fields in NC/SC that they scout have an unbelievable amount of Indian artifacts. Last year he found something similar but a little bit smaller, as well as a mortar and pestle that were sitting together in the dirt. He probably has over 150 arrow heads, some in REMARKABLE condition, along with pipes, spear heads, rock knives, and some clay jewelry.

Cool find, keep an eye out in that area!!

Great find! That is so cool, good job on getting an id on it, and knowing it wasn't just an ordinary rock!

Our family farm was unusual because there were no rocks. Any there had to have been brought in. One field was covered with flint chips and lots of hide scrapers. What arrowheads I found were mainly small bird points even though my sister once found a spear point. Once in a while we would find a large flint rock that hadn't been used. I also found a piece of sandstone with a groove in it for shaping arrow shafts, Someone from the local college said the site was probably a thousand years old.

Its called a grooved axe..hammer. It may have been bigger yet, but it looks to be worn down by the water. Is it really blunt on the end? I cant see the one side real good. It also looks like some fishing net weights Ive seen. Also Native American. Awesome find! I just found some killer artifacts yesterday as well...see my " Plantation" post. If you want to find more search plowed fields after a good rain.
