Default First Silver Dollar -1878 Morgan!

This forest site has been real good to us. Same spot my fiance found a 1904 Barber quarter last fall. Funny thing is, I almost stopped hunting the site since the last couple trips there were really slow! Finding a Morgan has always been on the top of my list. Im still shocked to have found one, but in this condition and being a first year Morgan, thats just mind blowing...It was quite the rush. Updated pic on page 2...

Happy Hunting everyone!

HOLY COW! You lucky dog you! Congrats on a fantastic find. I think Ms. Morgan is on ALL our lists of coins to find. Where do you go from here? Gold is the answer. Good luck. : )

Nice Find, I found one of hers sisters a couple of weeks ago. 1878 was the first year Morgans were minted, so all we can do now is find the more valuable key dates. How did it read on the AT? Mine was sitting on edge, so I got a 83 reading at first then turned and got a lower reading. It was about 5 1/2" down.

You have got to be kidding me. What a great find Dig! That Morgan is gorgeous. You have a really nice spot there and I think it has a lot more to give yet.

It was ringing in the 90's about 6" deep...

Thats what I was thinking when I saw the big ol' silver dollar edge sticking out of the dirt!

I've had some incredible finds my first year Md'ing. I owe a lot of it to this site and it's members. Also props to Stevo and Art C. for showing me first hand there is 1800s silver in the ground to be found!

I just rinsed it off with hot water. Thats it. It's still pretty dirty. The word LIBERTY is complete and bold in the headband, there is just some dirt over the TY in the pic. Im afraid to clean it any more...

Just pulled my 4th wood tick off for the day...they seem to be bad already this year.

Thumbs up

Don't clean it anymore. It's beautiful as-is. Congrats on that amazing coin. A silver dollar is a dream find for me. I know it'll be one of those coins that has me shaking again like the 1848 half I found.

You'll never forget the feeling you had when you dug that morgan up.

I'll second that on Stevo and Art C. After reading all their posts I know this area is full of good finds. On the other hand, don't even bother with most of the parks. Those two have done some serious silver cleaning around here...

For starters let me say what an awesome find. Seems like more and more Morgans are popping up lately. As for the cleaning, you can do it since it is not a key date coin. If you want it to look clean for your display you can do one of two things. The first thing is how collectors clean their coins and doesn't affect any numastic value which is a 20-40 second dip in hydrochloric acid. Or you can just take baking soda and a little bit of water, make it into a paste and rub it into the coin but this does affect the numastic value. I would clean it up for my display but that is just my opinion. Either way it looks beautiful. Big congrats!!! That is so on my want list...
