I am looking for advice on headphone usage and am starting to think my method is faulty. I usually put my headphones around my neck just hanging there so I can make out what kinda tone my target is, still hear whats going on around me, and not be bothering people close by with F2 loud speaker. Some advice that was given to me (DIGGER27,Patton) was listen to the shape and volume of the tones and you will be able to tell more about the target. I am starting to think maybe I should put the headphones on my ears where they belong to make out those subtle sounds. Also are there any headphones that work well with F2 in particular?

I have a pair of Killer B's, they work great with all my detectors, but nobody says you have to go that high end at first if you don't want to. I also tried a cheaper under $20 pair of Sony's from Walmart with the F2, they worked, but the sound is kind of "muddy". A higher end pair of Sony's in the $30-$40 range was much better. There are plenty of threads on this forum regarding opinions on using cheaper vs. more expensive headphones. It always comes down to the fact that people who say there is no difference never used good ones, and once they do, somehow they mysteriously change their mind. Whatever you use, try actually putting them on your ears. On most detectors in this hobby the tone is the thing, and you need to hear all parts of those tones plus the volume as well as you can...in my opinion. __________________ |

I started with a set of grey ghosts and have not tried anything cheaper, so I really can't comment on the chep vs expensive. However I can say for sure out them on your ears the sounds will be more clear and have less outside noise to affect how you hear them.

You absolutely want to put them on your ears. You miss more that way that if you used no headphones at all. Wise decision to put them on your head.

I have a pair of the Ultimate Gray Ghost. Really like these ,though the sound is not as distinct on hits as the original GG. Believe it or not, the next best pair I have found that works great with my F2 is a $25 pair of Garrett Deluxe HP's! My wife will use nothing else with her F2. They are a tad small for my big head, but the quality of sound and perception is very good.

Deffinately wear the headphones. Since the F2 has no volume control, you can find headphones with a volume control built into them or on their cord. You can find some older high-end headphones cheap at garage sales or places like Goodwill since everyone now uses earbuds to listen to their music. I use a set that are about 15 years old or older with the volume on the cord. Actually, my 15 Year-old daughter uses her earbuds with the F2 but the cords are way too short! Even the headphones which came in the packege deal with the F2 have a cord which is too short for my taste. I see Garrett has a set for under$30 with volume control and a coiled 10ft cord. I was thinking about getting a set as a back-up but was waiting for "garage sale season" first.

Thanks for the tip on the Garrett headphones! You actually posted your reply while I was still typing mine. That's the problem with us 'one-finger' typists!
