Default If one is hunting on a 100 acre farm...

Where would he start? No house, but there is a barn and milk house. There are two ponds and very little woods.. One of the ponds is in some woods.

Farm is used heavily for crops, but since it is a no-till operation, there hasn't been any plowing for years and years.. It's been a tobacco farm, hay farm, and dairy farm over the years.

No creeks but there are some low lying areas that will pond up if it rains hard for a few days..

This farm is part of a much larger tract that goes back to the early 1800's.

I'm tempted to simply throw a dart at the plat....

Maybe the ponds? Find out if they were used as swimming holes.

Excellent idea! I know that the farmer across the road used to fish there for blue gill that he used for bait elsewhere. I bet that others fished there over the years too.

Thanks

If time isn't a factor I'd explore it all, there was more then likely at least 2-3 old homes there at one time or another.. As I always say look for the old rock lined well's, there often all thats left of a old home site..
Personally I'd start off 100ft or so from the old standing barn, that would seem the best chance of stumbling onto one of the home sites..

I would start around the water and then walk a line from the water to the barn.

I can only tell you what I do because it works for me. This will help you to efficiently comb an area without missing anything.

I plot out approx 15x30 ft areas.I scan the 30ft length first for coins(block out Iron) .Then side to side (all tones)and I dig low tones and of course any remaining coins coming back across the plot.

I use small wooded stakes to keep me straight while I scan for objects so I have a target to walk to. If I do not do this I will stagger across the property like a drunk not sure if I missed anything.

I always start at the far end of the property either left or right side and scan 5 by 30 blocks until I'm sure I searched every inch of the property. If you have the time to try it let me know how it works for you.
