I just looked through your entire photo album (concerning the MD finds) and WOW! I am impressed with what you have found! My favorites are the "grills" (gold caps for teeth), brass knuckles, SCADS of jewelry and the picture of your detector next to what I assume is your son's MD! With the looks of your finds, I believe you when you mentioned that you hunt in high crime, drug infested parks. That's omething I haven't tried yet, but have thought about for some time. I live in Ledyard (near the casinos) and have never run into problems with authorities yet. Maybe it's just the part of town, but it might be different if I went into some of the New London parks where a lot of dealing goes down. If you ever have the inclination to hunt down here near the shore, let me know. I know some decent spots. We could show each other around some of our "places". By the way, I have an official letter from the state DEP informing us of legal spots and off limit spots to detect in CT. This applies to state land only and is separate from any local ordinances. I'll send it to you if you like. Just PM me. I tried to PM you, but you must have that feature turned off.

1. There are people of a certain political persuasion who are against all "extractive endeavours" (mining, drilling, fishing, metal detecting) no matter what they are. Even if it is perfectly legal.
2. Why are they against metal detecting? Because when you metal detect you are in effect doing an "end run" around the normal process of getting your fair share via government gratitude. You are getting more than your fair share. This goes against everything they hold dear. 3. So what can you do when faced with such a person? Usually nothing. They can't be reasoned with. Wait them out and they'll go away. One thing I did once to get on the really good side of a park manager (who admittedly had no problem with me to start with but I think it would have been a good move if he did) was to return a large gold ring to the owner AT THE PARK MANAGERS OFFICE. After that I think I could use a backhoe to that park now and the manager wouldn't care. If he had a problem with me I would have taken a picture of all three of us and sent it to the local paper as a feel good story. Maybe with some thought there are other ways to put the park manager or other authorities in a good light and get them on your side. |

Be friendly, be informed, what you do and say can effect those after you, I prefer to be sociable...you know those people who work for the place can help you find the best places, perhaps even places they worked before...the nastiest person can melt if your apologetic and understanding their view, even if you do come back later saying it is allowed and they you promise to not dig massive holes and invite them to come alone and watch you for a while.
Get them talking and you have gain a friend and not an enemy, i have had 20 minute chats with park workers and been shown good sites and even had them wave to me when they see me....all for the sake of being friendly, remember these people probably dont have that many friends with their attitude, they might be in big need of someone to respect their job and position and respect the park they are spending 40 hours a week looking after |

That's that, they see me they go the other way. This new field I was at was in a different area and I haven't started my crusade against the BS.. High crime is no problem tell the meat heads you can get the detector at walmart for $100 and have your digger out. That or your a cop looking for bullet casings, they leave you alone. Ya I'll see if I can take off my PM that or do a friends request. I hunt everyday let me know I go out your way from time to time. Thanks again __________________ |

If I hunt a public park I will call the park rangers and ask them if its ok, most of the time they say sure as long as I stay off the athletic fields which I do anyway... some of these parks are historic... try being civilized for a change... http://www.fmdac.org/parks/ct.htm __________________ |

Craig's got a point, Jamie, CT's pretty good with letting people detect, let's not let it get to the point of needing permits or being restricted from more hunting grounds like hunters in other states. Low profile is the way to go, and if I'm asked to move on, I do...there's still plenty of other spots to hunt. Confrontations will only cause problems.
