Since my GPP is coming today (I can't wait to go out and use it) I made a glove for my right hand and sewed on a Chunk O' Metal to the thumb, to supertune it, like Digger27 shows in his video.
I thought I'd try it on my Fisher Pointer. Yes...it works. I can add about a 1" to its range. But..... The "Chunk O' Metal" has to be about 2" back from the tip of it. The sensitivity seems to change when... 1) During different temps 2) During different battery levels. 3) Just out of the Blue. 4) Becomes worthless when you move the Sens. knob even a fraction. So...I can't get a consistent sensitivity level on it. But...in an Air test, using my "Chunk O' Metal", holding the Fisher Pointer just right (seems to act-up when holding with the Tip in the "down" position) being REALLY careful NOT to accidentally touch the sens knob, then positioning my Chunk O' Metal JUST right...I can get another inch out of it. So, in conclusion...Yes, yes you can Supertune a Fisher Pointer, it's just that you'll never get it positioned just right enough, or be able to hold it just right enough, or it'll be worthless because you have to "hold" your "Chunk O' Metal" just 2" from the Tip without pointing it down, and then everything changes again when/if you accidentally move the sensitivity knob even just a little bit. So...have fun! And btw...this is the crud I do when I get really bored......lol........ __________________ |

I really like my Harbor Freight Centech pointer. I must have gotten one that was made on a good day. That thing pin points great ! I keep the Fisher in my pouch as a back up ,just in case. Maybe some day I will get a Garrett, but I just can't see the justification since the cheapo harbor freight works so well.

Could someone explain to me why it is supposedly better to have a chunk of metal on your thumb. I am genuinely interested in the logic behind the thumb metal approach. It can only give a approximate location, so sensitivity is not max without adjusting your grip.
By securing a washer or coin on the rod at the location that is precisely just before triggering, it can't get any better. In addition, the pot can be adjusted. I would rather make more finds than spend time trying to get the pinpointer maxed out in the field. http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=104713 |

Supertuning the Fisher Pointer is useless. It can be done, but really doesn't add enough sensitivity to make it worthwhile...and its a PITA to do, as its just the tip of it that works. The Fisher is better than nothing. Supertuning the Garrett is easy. Here's a pic of what Ive done ![]() I wear this on my right hand. I'll pinpoint my target using my MD. This gets me a 3" area of where the target is, and how deep. I'll then turn on my GPP using my left hand, then use my right hand. I'll supertune it by sliding my thumb up and stop just short of it signaling. I then can scan the ground. I'll now get with-in a 1" area. I'll did a plug, and then scan the plug and hole without supertuning by just lowering my thumb. The target is in either the plug or hole. If I can't get a signal from the plug or hole, I'll adjust my thumb, re-supertune the GPP and scan again. Then repeat in the non supertune mode. Find my target in non supertune then...while holding the GPP near the target, I'll turn it off then on again. This now changes the GPP to act more like Fisher pointer. It'll signal only when I'm 1/4" or touching the target. After finding my target, I'll re-supertune the GPP and scan the plug, the hole and surrounding area for more targets. Reset, repeat. I've located targets 4" under with a supertuned GPP. Hope this helps __________________ |

You could get a Pistol Probe and not do any of this supertuning and adjustments. If I want a short range location, I have a Centec that does a great job for $15 with a flat washer taped on the tube. :-) The Fisher will tune-up the same way and that is commonly a freebee.
