Default Standing scoops v.s Handheld scoops?

I've had this question for quite a while - could handheld plastic scoops be in fact, better than all the full-fledged, RTG/Stavr/Stealth scoops around?

The way i see it is that plastic handhelds can be passed over the coil to determine if the find is there. You also dig the hole much faster, since you use ur hand compared to positioning your large SS scoop and pushing with your foot.

The sand on my beaches are very fine, with no rocks/shells at all. Perhaps that's the reason why they are faster?

I bought an RTG aluminum scoop with about a three foot handle, because I made a plastic scoop and hated it. I had the same theory as you and bought a plastic feed scoop and drilled holes in it. Went to a swimming lake and hunted the beaches. It sucked having to bend down and dig and trying to wave the scoop by the coil. We decided to go to Myrtle Beach and I got the RTG. So much nicer and a heck of a lot faster. PS I drag the scoop and I know exactly where I have been.

I think it is give or take. If you look at the time spent bending over to scoop with the hand scoop. I just recently upgraded to the long handled scoop and my knees are liking it a little more, and it is a little faster, I seem to be moving between targets faster because I dont have to bend or squat to dig that target. To me if I pinpoint correctly i can get the target with one or two scoops with the long handled scoop. If I miss with the hand scoop I have to recheck the pinpoint.

Just my 2 cents.

yea that's the good thing with handled scoops, it makes gridding your beaches very easy - you can overlap your swings.

I love my short plastic scoop, not to much in the water lol but on beach I can dig a foot deep with 3 or 4 big fast scoops. My recovery time is fast. Im young and dont mind the workout or constantly bending over. But I will definitely need a good long handled scoop for when im wading.
Funny thing is I swing with my left arm and dig with MY right...my right forearm is getting bigger than my left!

Post kidding

Just kidding with you guy's,i do have a metal hand scoop that i sold to a friend who dive's,i bought it for snorkeling it was ss,other wise i have a old steel one that i don't use, hand scoop's take more time, use more energy, harder on ware & tare on the back,i have a herniated disc, and ripped right bicep, dig with the right, swing with the left,if i wan't a work out i will go to the gym hand scooping is not faster,it's slower, handled scoop's are faster, recover more in less time with a handled scoop ,you can,but sooner or later, we will see you hunting in the future with a handled scoop, happy hunting Earl

If they were better we'd all have them instead of carrying around $150.00-$250.00 4' long scoops!

just to clarify, yea i do have a handled scoop but its knee length. gonna get a Stealth soon, this was just a question that popped up. An old pro with 20+ years experience I know uses hand scoops but perhaps it had been due to the ease of shipping it over into the country and convenience of bringing around.

If I had nothing but a hand scoop, I don't think I'd even bother detecting. I cannot imagine how exhausting that would be..

Lavender? Hand held scoops? Come on guys, really? If you like to bend over and scoop every target or get on your knees for deep ones then you need to move to San Fran. I stay away of bending over. It leaves the wrong message and hurts your back. I don't want my photo winding up on the internet taken from behind and on my knees arm deep in sand. What are you thinking with the little scoop?

Work smarter, not harder.
