So I went on a night hunt with Anthony1207. We went to a couple city parks and a school. Other than what I am about to show you, it was an uneventful night. Just a bunch of clad. So I get a 12-44/45 at 7" on the Etrac. Cut the plug, dig some more dirt and this was in the dirt with it's back facing me. Now I knew immediately what was on the front. It also had some German writing on the front and says "Dezember 16 1938" on the back. The front reads "Der Deutschen Mutter". That translates to the German Mother. Below is the history of this award bestowed upon German mothers by Hitler himself. I saw one selling for $175 on Craigslist. I cannot believe I found this in America and at a city park much less. This is some serious history right here. Here is an short story of the medal...
Many social programs were implemented by Hitler to encourage the growth of a strong German Nazi Volk. One such program was to advocate the virtues of motherhood. This program included a gigantic Nazi propaganda campaign to urge women to increase the size of their families. Cash incentives were paid for each child born. On the 16th of December 1938 Hitler instituted a new award to honor German Nazi motherhood, especially the large family. The cross of Honor of the German Mother (Ehrenkreuz der deutschen Mutter) was created in three classes with the criteria as follows: Bronze 3rd Class Mother's Nazi Cross - A bronze Christian Cross normally worn about the neck suspended by a 10mm blue ribbon with two white stripes at each edge. A round shield was affixed to the cross, bearing the inscription 'Der Deutschen Mutter' encircling a black enamel Nazi swastika on a white enamel field. Behind the shield and between the arms of the cross was a projection of rays. The arms of the cross were blue enamel with white enamel edges. The reverse was plain save for the date '16 Dezember 1938' followed by a facsimile of Hitler's signature. From 16th December 1938, when the decoration was first instituted, to mid 1939, Nazi mother's crosses bore the inscription 'Das Kind adelt die Mutter' (The child ennobles the mother). Why this change on the reverse of the cross was brought about is not known. The manufactures logo was sometimes found on the back as well. This award was normally presented in a blue envelope bearing the title of the award on the front. The award was also accompanied by a large certificate bearing a facsimile of Hitler's signature. __________________ |

Cool mutter Kruez! Very unusal indeed, I once saw a woman with a 1st class cross around her neck! That means she sent 8 or more sonse to war! Wearing a cross like that in Germany is a serious crime but I think her boys mean meant more to her than a fine....I think this was probably a war trophy brought back after WWII and someone dropped it. You must have some awesome soil for the paint to still be on there! Cool find!

That find would be enough for me to collect a few WWII relics and make a small display. One of the coolest finds here in the US in terms of militaria I've seen on this forum... congrats

Yup! Nice Third Reich-era medal find!!! This German Mother Cross was no doubt brought by a US GI as war souvenir home and he probably dropped this medal on US soil until that cross was found by Spm673. I used to collect Nazi German medals before I returned back to MDing and sold my entire medal collection to get money to buy a new AT Pro last year. Cool find BTW!!

Then it would speak German and I wouldn't understand it anyway. Lol. Also I won't sell it either.

Whoa, that's one that could've been put in the eye popping finds section. It's not like you see these turn up every so often. What a great find Sean. That's why this is a great hobby, you never know what will pop up out of the ground. Congrats on a super find.

I thought about putting it in the eye popping section. I'm still in shock finding that. My best relic by far.
