a quick google search calls those "Operator Interface Monitors". (the pics kinda resemble a microwave to me, lol)
i didn't really see what they're used for, but sounds like maybe a phone or alarm monitoring system?
(you paid $2400 without even knowing what it was?)

We use these at work. However, the new version(last seven+ years) are touchscreen LCD's.

I would waste no time selling it and take the first offer you get. It's obsolete.

OPERATOR INTERFACE TERMINAL...It is a control panel for anything that runs on a computer based program. Factory machine lines to home security systems to programable thermostats for HVAC.

Bear in mind that in 1982, schools were putting in TRS-80 computers. Ususally a lucky school would have two. They were 15,000.00 each. They used giant floppy disks or tape drives.
They only have collector value now.

Wow, that must have been something to dig up. How deep was it? And, in what range did it ring up (iron, foil, copper, etc)?

$15k for a TRS-80, which was already on the market for 3 years, competition from Apple, IBM, and Commodore? More in the $500 range...

Don't bad mouth my computer. Oh, I guess it just runs like an 80's model.

We had apple IIe's in my school in early 80's. Friend had a trash80 at home and I had a Commodore c64. I think it was around $800. Really funny thinking back to those days.
