Default Permission granted, hunt started, and the jerk arrived...

I received permission to hunt a great location from a business located on a historic property. All excited, I packed up, planned my day, my cooler and and drove there. when I arrived and started detecting, the "other owner" of the place came out and got all smarta** with me.

I greeted him and extended my hand - and he refused to shake it. I explained that I had permission, and he just spat "no you don't, because the person who gave you permission didn't ask me." I explained that I wouldn't have come on the property without permission and I didn't know that I asked the wrong person (his partner.) I told him that I never hunt without permission ... he had stopped listening.... what-ever.

Anyway, it was hard to hold my tongue, but I did it for the hobby. He was just a little jerk. I figured he was just compensating for being ugly, small, or some other little thing. Anyway, I just packed up and left and had to drive back to Lexington.

I wanted to give him advice that he shouldn't really smart off like that to people twice his size. Someday that's going to get him hurt. ;-)

Bummer. I know the feeling though. Afterwards, I can always think of 10 witty things I could have said but my mind is blank while the jerk is yelling at me!

After my run in last year with a cranky old! #@$#, I have decided that if it happens again on another site, I am just going to laugh and leave. Maybe spit out a few nice words if the person keeps mouthing. I have decided after meeting the grumpy old man that it's a fact of life that some people are just ignorant @$#@ and no amount of explaining will work.

Better luck on your next site.

Hope you dumped your trash pouch on the ground before you left...wouldn't want to steal his property.

I did email the partner. I'm sure access is impossible, but wanted him to know that I still appreciated his granting permission. He was a very nice guy. How the two are partners I'll never know.

Anyway the rest of the weekend was a bust. Silver Skunked at three sites. Tired and sore. I think I need a break from detecting.

I'm sorry to hear this pocketspill. I think that you did the right thing all the way around. You left disappointed but without fussing and then you contacted the partner that granted you permission. Maybe the partner that spotted you on the property was having a bad day and the guy you got permission from will talk to him and then grant you permission and possibly offer an apology. I hope that things get worked out and you are able to hunt the property.

That's a bummer for sure! It's probably best that you kept your cool. The first owner could have other properties he could let you into, or know others who own property.

You did the right thing even though that can be difficult to do at times. Especially in this situation.

From your posts I've read you are a stand up guy and this just means better things to come.

I've learned that there is a small group of people on this earth that are just plain mean, angry, and bitter at the world. All we can do is smile and wish them a good day and move on.

Sorry that happened and ruined your hunt. As mentioned your handling of it may get you some other areas from the good owner....... Good Luck and Happy Hunting.....

Remember, your digging tool has more than one use, and can cause some damage, if "accidentally" applied to flesh.....fyi.....lol

I'm not one to back down from a confrontation

while on his property it is his rules...I also would have walked away

...but once on the sidewalk or the street (public proberty) I would have verbally torn him a new "you know what"

You should send the guy who granted you permission a little gift card to a local eatery to piss off the partner to show your thanks for his attempt. You did the right thing by leaving, this most likely was not about you at all, but possibly partners who do not get along.

He was part owner of the place, I really had no choice. He was within his rights. I really am reacting more to the way he approached me than the fact that he didn't want me there.

First of all bravo on your saintly patience with someone who truely deserved anything negative you could have said. Best to be polite and leave in that situation. But, I would have said something to his partner to the effect of "thanks for your generous offer to hunt such a wonderful historic site and my condolences for having to work for a partner who undermines you so openly. You truely have the patience of a saint my friend. Please let me know if you have any other properties you wouldn't mind me visiting that he does not have any input on.". I bet that little troll has a metal detector.
