Question How can I find a date for a shotshell headstamp?

I was hunting down at my uncle's new house near Roanoke, VA, with my Vaquero. I found plenty of nails when I turned off the discriminate just to make sure it was working. 8^)

I found the brass end of a paper shotshell (the paper had long since rotted away), and the headstamp says "WINCHESTER REPEATER No 12". I don't have a picture, since I left it with my uncle as a birthday present (yeah, I'm a cheapskate, but I also gave him a nice book).

Does anyone know of a resource to date shotshells with?

Thanks,

-- Tom

That is a great link. How about another that has values of rare head stamps?

This dealer: http://www.ammo-one.com/00.html sells single cartridges, of course what prices you can find there depend on current selection. Many collectors prefer full unopened boxes but those can be very, very expensive.

Thanks for the link. I visited it, and the headstamp was there, but I couldn't find any date information. I doubt that it is rare, and I'm positive it isn't valuable, I was just hoping to find out how old it was.

Thanks again,

-- Tom

That Cartridge Corner page is one of my favorites, actually I'll probably order the cartridge CD if it's still available. Take a look at this subpage: http://members.shaw.ca/cartridge-corner/wrahelp.htm

Then take a caliper measure and take a good look at the primer. If you are lucky and your case remain is older than 1933 you might be able to get a year range.
