I know the majority of peoples thoughts on this lean to the Garret Pro Pointer, But was wondering ( since I too have a budget, one aimed at a Tesoro Vaq ) if any of the other main manufacturers made a decent and reliable pin pointer?
Your thoughts and experiences are appreciated. Lakota |

The Bounty Hunter and Fisher ones are the same and a joke at that $59 retail price. They are low quality and not worth $5 and I have no respect for anyone that tries to sell these at full retail...or sell them at all for that matter. I have an F-Point...use it as a back-scratcher, never considered ever taking it into the field. No depth, thin plastic, no adjustments to fix that depth and the battery cover keeps falling off. Got it for free in my F2 package, and even at that price it was a ripoff. Garbage. The Automax is liked by some, not thought of as a good value by many more. Plus, it is huge. Here is the deal... If you are on a budget get the Cen-Tech handheld from Harbor Freight. With a 20% off coupon, about $15. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ANY OF THE OTHER UNDER $100 UNITS! I used one of these at first...it works well for the money. It is as good, and most of the time if you get a good one, way better than the BH and Fisher types, and definitely better than nothing. Use that till you can save up enough to buy the Propointer or one of the other top end units. For what we do, the PP is the most recommended around here for a reason, I own 2, but the other top end units have their fans, also. __________________ |

I suspected that might be the case with the other non-propoint units, Glad I asked before I jumped.
Well a Vaq and a Propoint is more together then what the wife and I were wanting to spend right off the bat , Feel that I should be calling myself lucky that I have her on board to line me out with a good unit to begin with... Wonder if I should consider the Cibola and a propoint combo to keep in the Vaq price range. I already know without a doubt that I need a pointer... Not having one is mounting some frustration lol. Thanks for the help on the pointer question guys. Lakota |

Starting out with what you can afford would be my advice and I am sure the Cibola will meet yours needs until you can upgrade ... By all means get the Propointer !!

I agree with digger. I have the Cen Teck from harbor freight. Works fine for the money.

Problem with buying a cheaper model is that you will end up getting the better one sooner-or-later and the few $$$ you spent for the cheap model is money that could have gone toward the good one. I'd start saving until I could afford the better model and be done with it. I like the good stuff and the Garrett ProPointer is the best IMO. Second to that is the SunRay X-1 Probe (I know some will disagree with me on this). I have and use them both.

Pay shipping and I'll send you an automax V4. Not the best, but will hit on the camo targets....

Will do bud, I have to weigh it and see what it'll cost They're not too heavy tho... I actually liked mine before I got the propointer. It does the trick and saved me a few cuss words along the way hahah Most say you have to be touching the item for it to sound, but I must have a faulty unit because it will sound off up to 4 inches on larger items. Nuthin real special, but something to get you through until you get your PP

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOwS0...eature=related <---Watch this video it a pointer shootout. I would pay the shipping and try that Automax for free and keep it for a spare. When you watch the shootout/ comparison you will see why the Pro Pointer is the one Everyone uses.....

True Van. I used to argue that a pinpointer was a pinpointer until Vexhold was kind enough to get me a propointer for the christmas exchange.
They are like night and day, as they say, seeing is believing! The PP saves me a ton of time, and I just didn't know what I was missing. Someone on here said it best "I found the other half of my detector!" __________________ |

I wouldn't buy less of a detector for the sake of a pinpointer. Get the Vaquero (if that's what you want) and the cheap Harbor Freight pinpointer.
Get good at pinpointing with your detector and you might decide you don't even need a pinpointer. When mine dies it won't be getting replaced. The longer I own it the less I use it. |
