Default Large Cent Lunchbreak and A Mystery Find

Went out on my lunchbreak yesterday to my usual spot. Found a Large Cent which still has some detail left on it. The soil here is pretty rough on coppers. The date is 1838. Didn't really clean it a whole lot other than rinse off the heavy dirt. The other find, which is a mystery to me, was a foot away from the LC. It is the shape of a coin and is the exact same size as the LC but not as thick. It is worn smooth on both sides and is stained a darkish color. I've tried looking at it with a magnifying glass quite a few times but can't make out any detail whatsoever. It's that smooth. Both finds were down around 8 inches. I found the 1960D silver Rosie last Thursday on my lunchbreak as well but never got a chance to post it. Hope this mild winter we're having here in the Northeast lasts till springtime. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!!

That largie is in very nice shape. Congrats on your coins. I bet that unknown is a reale. Dglantz's was like that. Wow that spot continues to surprise. Look forward to seeing what you pull next. The stuff your pulling from there goes back over 3 centuries. Keep it Bro!

First of all, congrats on the 'big penny', she's a beauty. As for the smooth disk, any chance of getting a pic, post cleanup? I know you don't see any detail but sometimes a 2nd, third or 100th set of eyes on it can pick up a detail you hadn't noticed. Also, I was a bit confused by your description, do you think the coin is silver, copper or something else? If silver, it could be a reale, though I have no experience with the big ones. I've only found a single 1/2 reale in my time swinging. If its copper it could be an older large cent or some type of colonial coinage. My guess simply from what I see, colonial. I've dug a few and they've all had that smooth edged look with no rim. Just my 2 cents which turns out isn't even worth 2 cents.

Thanks Tim! That spot does have some history for sure. You never know what is coming out of the ground next. Found a rusted old screwdriver today. I had to laugh when I pulled that outta the hole. There is a good chance I can get out on Sunday. If the weather is decent I'll give you a shout.

very cool finds, i'd be willing ta bet that the unknown coin is a halfpenny, if its just a tad bit smaller than the large cent and half as thick.

Congrats on pulling some oldies. The copper is in great shape for around here. That other coin I think is a Reale. If it's paper thin that's probably what it is, I found one that worn hunting with Tim back in the fall. A great find despite being worn. And congrats on the Rosie too.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the confusion in the description. Honestly, I don't know what this unknown object is made out of. It has me confused. One minute I'm thinking silver. The next I'm thinking worn out copper. I have no experience either with Reale's. This find is very unique for me. Never dug anything so smooth like this before. I will try to get better pics posted this weekend.

1st of all nice hunt! to me it looks silver by the picture..if that's the case it's way to big to be a one reale more like 2 or 4 reale. gently drop it flatly on a hard surface silver makes that un mistakeable "clink"sound unlike a copper coin.
it's definitely 1700's no doubt.

Shine a strong flashlight on it sideways. It brings out any detail. Look at my avatar and do it like that

Nice finds, congrats! Hopefully you can get some details to show in the worn coin.

Thanks for the reply Heavy!! I gently dropped it on the kitchen table and the sound is very bright and crisp. Doesn't sound anything like the LC.
