Military button ID?

Hi,

I found this on a turn of the century site. I have found late 1880's to 1940's coins/relics at this site as well. Sorry no picture reference for size but smaller than a regular button and easily fits inside a US penny. Has some rust buildup on the back.

Looks like an 1854-1875 general service button. Probably a cuff button based on your size description.

Do the 1854-1875 cuff buttons have brass backs? Mine has some rust buildup on the back so I am thinking it had an iron back.

According to this website some do have iron backs.

Could it be the 'loop' that is iron and rusting, not the back?
