What do you say when you approch someone to ask permission to hunt there private property?

I just smile and say "Hi may name is(blank) and I'm interested in our local history, I look for old relics and coins, would you mind if I do a little metal detecting in your yard?"
I've never had anyone say no, they usually say yes before I can say anything else.
But I do choose yards that the inhabitant obviously doesn't care for much.
