I have been fortunate enough to get out 6 times since the year began. 4 of my six silvers have been Rosie's, Now in my mind The Rosie is the least desirable silver but I'm still happy to see any silver in the hole. Today the weather was warm so I ran out for a couple of hours to a local permission for a couple of hours in the afternoon. It was a small yard and I almost forgot that I had spoke to the owner about detecting it. l put the stock coil back on the Equinox, seems My plugs were getting too big and I did not want to go into a small yard with the 15in. on. Long story short, I dug a pair of 52 Rosies, 2 wheaties, and a little clad in just over 2 hrs. Heavy rain came and chased me back to the truck.

On another hunt, last Sat. I went back to the 1820s place that was my last hunt of the 2018. I had a great hunt, I dug a one wiper, my nicest IHP so far. The day started with a good indian signal, but turned out to be a zincoln. Next I got wheat, then coming into the side yard I hear that sweet squeak with a 29-30. I said this will be good. A Merc about 6in. down.. I yell it over to my buddy and he tells me he doesn't have a coin yet but he's chasin a good signal. Five or so minutes later he pulls a nice gold ring with an emerald in it. He had a multi silver day with a bunch of wheats, 5 IHPS a V nickel and Buff. Me, I had 7 wheaties, 3 IHPS. THE Merc and a sterling ring. Now 2 of the Indians I had to soak overnite with the wheats to get a date off them. They cleaned up pretty nice but the wheaties were toasted. I did get a 1909 but very little detail was left. It was getting dark and my buddy reminded me that we still had to go in and put our feet up and chat with the owners for a little bit. I said ok just one more coin, I get a shallow 15-16,and a little bit of a squeak and a quick 27. now we ended up back in the side yard where I got the zincoln on my first target of the day and was a little gunshy on mid-tones. My buddy said in a place this old he digs any repeatable. Thats good advice. So I dig, three in. down I pull a rusty nail, rescan, a little to the right I get a smooth 19-20, Perfect IHP, signal, buddy said he thinks he passed on that earlier cause it was too shallow, I flip a small 3in. plug and laying flat on the bottom of the plug was nice green IHP. One wipe and you could see how nice it was. Filled in the plug and out of habit I scanned one more time and damn if that 27 squeak didn't pop again, clear this time just a little to the right. Meter said deep. I saw shiney in the plug, it was a beautiful sterling ring. It was time to go. I should have looked for the stone in the hole. But it was getting late and I didn't think about it. Still kicking myself for that. Now as with the first hunt there I got a surprise with the officers pin on clean up, this hunt I thought I had a tag of some sort, scrubbed it with water and a nylon brush, I couldn't see any detail on it. The next morning I went out on the back porch lookin over things and I noticed some numbers on the tag. Turn out to be a sundial or something. Another cool surprise. Till next time HH Mark

Congrats on a pile of great finds and a great story Mark! What do you soak the Indians in?

Mark,
Congrats on your latest finds. You are really doing well thus far for 2019. I am surprised you do not use the 6" coil on your Nox. It's a real coin killer. I hope to hunt a bit today. Continued good luck.

Thanks

Ron thank you sir, I usually use a lid from a plastic folgers coffee can. I will put a little dawn and a little olive oil down, lay the coins face up and put a drop or two of oil followed by a drop of dawn. Soak overnite, at least 12hr. sometimes longer if the crud seems stubborn when I first brush them when I get home. Now If it looks dried up that just means its working so I add a little more oo and dawn.Wait a little while and I use a small wood dial rod to hold the coin down and I begin an erasing motion with a wooden toothpick, circular then back and forth. I will flip it over then back to keep the work area wet. This can take ten minutes or so per side. I know its tedious and a little time consuming but I love the old copper coins and I don't mind taking the time. After rubbing for a bit you will see the raised highlights to come through, after that its up to you how far you want to go. Just remember to keep your work area wet while erasing. Give it a try. HH Mark

That is some very nice hunting Mark. Congrats! Your really off to a great start here in 2019. You know that any Silver to me is welcome and the Rosie may not be the most desirable but I still cherish every one I dig. I still have every one I have dug. Every silver coin only counts as one regardless of what it is. Trapper

I did use the 6

Bubba, thanks Yes a great start for 19 but alas old man winter has shut us down. I have the six on my other 800 for woods and such but I have been hunting older dirt lately and afraid I could be missing deeper signals. Good luck to you as well in 19. HH Mark

Trapper, thank you. I also have every silver, Ihp. wheat and so on. When people ask if I ever sell anything I just shake my head no and tell them the cool factor is worth way more to me. Now if I dug a ring or coin worth a couple grand maybe I would sell to pay off my investment. Winter returned today and it won't be long before the ground locks up. Take care. Mark

Congrats Mark! You got some mighty nice looking finds there. You found yourself a good old spot. It is always extra special seeing a mint mark on those mercs. HH.

Thanks

John, thanks unfortunately after the guy telling us we wouldn't find anything I think he may have been a little upset that we found so much in just 2 hunts there. Between the two of us, 8 silver, 2 rings 1 gold 1 silver at least a dozen IHPs a bunch of wheaties, V nicks Buffs a couple buck in clad not to mention some cool tokens, pins and tags. We looted the place pretty good. When we left we ask if we could come back in the spring the guy seemed non-commital. After a freeze-thaw I would definitely like to hit that placer again. Oh well, we'll see. Stay warm. Mark
