So I've been lucky enough to get to hunt in same town as a civil war battlefield. I scored my first confederate buckle!
But not 5 feet away I also found this pin. To me, I instantly thought officers collar pin from WW1 era. Now I know there was a camp where troops trained during WW1 in this same town but the area this pin came from was in an area that is at least a mile or more from camp and was forest at the time. Could this pin be older than WW1 era or was I right?

I think your initial thought was correct. To me it also appears to be a U.S. Army Officer insignia from around WW1 era. It's a neat find and congrats on the Confederate buckle!

Thanks!
Still hunting the area day 3. Just hit a CW bullet and a cartridge shell that appears to be WW1 era.

It is a WW1 era officers insignia. If you can clean the pin clasp up a little. Almost looks French made to me.
