Fill your holes on the beach PLEASE

Reporting somebody who isnt filling their holes could backfire on you big time. Thats calling attention to a problem they may not have realized existed. Problems they dont know about or havent considered yet , most of the time arent problems at all. But when people start reporting it , then the issue gets dealt with , ....a ban is usually more likely than them dealing with people individually. They may just give you a big thank you for reporting it as they draw up rules against detecting altogether.

That's where being an ambassador for the hobby comes in, you make clear that it's your hobby, and leaving open holes is a major sin. You have to be part of the community, and do what you can to help keep things safe for other people. The problem needs corrected, before there is an actual accident or injury, because you don't want to be the guy holding the scoop or shovel, any where near where someone got hurt in one of those hole, even if the incident happened weeks before. If you do nothing, the guy will continue to leave holes, teach other people that it's okay, and you still face the same potential for a ban. Least, if you speak up, some one is putting a few words in there, that the vast majority of the people in this hobby get pissed off seeing open holes, just like the rest of the public, who would much rather be checking out the bikinis, than carefully watching sand and their own feet, avoiding craters.

I agree with you on the responsibility part , but in reality its not going to make you look good for reporting , you will be seen as part of the problem because you are detecting there. People should be filling their holes....period.....but the reality is that there are always going to be holes on the beach from dogs, kids , etc. , it goes with the territory , but they wont be banned. As soon as people start reporting "detectorists" leaving holes , detectorists can get banned. Im all for doing the right thing , but people need to realize the logical next step after this stuff gets reported is a ban , there is nothing else they can do. Snitching on the goofball leaving holes is as good as telling whoever is in charge that they really ought to ban detectors there. Thats not being an ambassador for the hobby , they dont really care that we are nice guys and most of us fill our holes ,.... as far as their concerned you dont need to be detecting there either. Bans will follow.........

Stop being such a negative nellie... I explained the hobby to the ranger I reported the guy leaving his holes and he thanked me and told me good luck after he escorted the slob out... and I would do it again...

I think you might have gotten lucky. If the guy had of reported it to his boss it might have turned out differently. I could just picture 3 or 4 of them sitting around drinking coffee talking up a storm. Next thing you know detecting banned.

All hypothetical on your part...

Im glad that worked out for you. Just showing the other side of the situation. What do you think would eventually happen if they keep getting reports about that ? Im not saying it was wrong to report it necessarily , only that there is a less attractive road paved with good intentions

Main problem is a family digging a hole they leave is seen by a lot less than someone walking down a beach and leaving a hundred holes in front of everyone. You see a family digging you don't usually hang around long enough. You see someone digging with a detector you know in seconds they are leaving holes. Anyone who thinks its only someone who detects is noticing this is just kidding themselves. Plus if they see you leaving holes, they will likely think you are the one who left every hole. Including the ones dug by dogs.

I was detecting on a small beach yesterday. I filled in every hole and blended it in . I also picked up what trash I seen. I had 4 regulars to the beach that came up to me and thanked me for respecting THERE beach. I know they don't OWN the beach but they feel its there beach. They are not the people that you want to have dislike you and your detecting. I know some people will say that it doesn't matter how they feel about it but you would be wrong. There the first ones that will take action to correct what they see as a problem. I don't understand why this is an issue in the first place. It's sand. It's crazy simple and easy to fill in your holes. It took me less then 10 seconds to push the sand back in the hole and smooth it.

Lol! The ten commandments didn't work. The code of ethics doesn't work either. Usually once a year I play dumb when someone is talking to me about the good hunting spots. They usually tell me how to sneak into illegal spots to hunt and how to do it. I'll say "You can detect there?" They'll say "As long as you don't get caught!"

A representative of the hobby, reporting it, puts the blame on the individual, and away from our hobby in general. If the only complaints come from the other beach goers, who are nice enough to leave stuff for us, it kind of looks like filling holes in the sand is optional. Pretty sure the would rather confront one offender, and tell them to fill their holes, than take on the entire hobby, and have to confront everyone who steps on the beach with a metal detector.

A lot of open holes on the beach, is a safety hazard, and distracts people from enjoying the beach. It's a problem that will eventually need to be corrected, before people get hurt. We are all part of the same community. It's not metal detectors against the rest of the population. It's on individual creating the problem, not the entire hobby.

Consider that the police can't stop a crime, or catch a criminal, unless the crime get reported. Sure, they get lucky sometimes, being at the right place, right time, but for the most part, they need the crime reported, they need witness to step up, and help out as well. People who rob and burglarize, will keep doing it, until they get caught. Just because you, your family, your neighbors, your friends weren't the victims today, doesn't make it alright to ignore the problem, to not get involved it you see it happening, or saw it happen to someone else. They aren't going to keep robbing the same individual, over and over...

Metal detecting isn't a crime (in most areas), and I'd kind of like to keep it that way. If we are willing to take responsibility for ourselves, and for others, we can all get along just fine. Those that choose to be irresponsible, need to be corrected, before they do some real damage.

Come on now,
over 2700 views and not 1 scuba diving detectorists is going to
chime in and tell us if he fills his holes or not, in 30 feet of water :?:

Hey! I scuba detected in 150ft of water with my sea hunter and filled my hole so no one would break a leg down there!

Filling in the holes is the right thing to do, i always do it wether i am digging at the park, beach or back in the woods. There are a few reasons to fill them in firstly i would hate to see someone get hurt over a few pieces of clad. Secondly it is very easy for people to complain and say that us metal detectors are bad and that will get are privileges to dig at public places taken away. Do you really want that ??

As a representative of the metal detecting hobby , you are letting those with power to ban know....that METAL DETECTORISTS are being irresponsible and leaving the place a mess. Congratulations ! .....what a wonderful ambassador that is. If they didnt already have a negative view of us they do now. Would be better off if they were left wondering , since they may not even know it was someone with a metal detector who is leaving the holes. If you think one individual isnt SEEN AS the entire hobby by the non detecting public , then you must be dreaming  If they keep getting reports of the place being abused by people with metal detectors you can kiss that place goodbye.

Those that choose to be irresponsible , should whenever possible , be corrected by us instead of informing those in authority of a problem that can lead to our own dismissal ;)

But I am not talking right vs. wrong , if you guys want to keep everyone informed of the problems caused by people with a metal detector then go ahead  I will either handle situations like that personally , or let them possibly go on thinking its a kid or someone searching for clams instead of informing them that some people with metal detectors are causing a problem.

" A representative of the hobby, reporting it, puts the blame on the individual... "

Reporting it puts the blame on METAL DETECTING....more often than not.
