At first I thought it was 8 inches tall, but then how could you hold it between your fingers?

Between fingers its look like little :-D But its 8 cm :-)
And this item is not from military area, but i can not say its not from ww2..
Light deaeration valve? Really I dont know, but the cartridge is closed and the visible thread is immobile, potted ... for me, strange thing :-)
