I dug this Saturday, and honestly almost threw it in my junk bag. I posted a picture of my coins in the coin and relic room, and another member questioned it being a snake buckle. Being that it was broken, I threw it in the tumbler with the coins for a few hours. Is this in fact a snake buckle? In this small area last year I found a back pack j hook, and I have found a multitude of early 1850's to 1870's coins. So the era is correct.
