Me and a couple buddies found a civil picket post two years ago and I've pounded it to death with my etrac and ctx and my buddies with their detectors. I went out hoping to find some things my ctx missed and I did find a couple of old very small casings and a few tiny bullets. My best finds of the day are a 45/70 that was in the woods and out in the field I found two cannon fuses, a piece of brass or copper that is attached to a piece of wood with screws. If any of you guys know what it is please let me know and four bale seals. My two buddies found a .69 cal round ball a piece. Ty for looking and HH!

Nice finds! That reminds me.. I need to take mine and rehunt a couple of camp sites that I've hunted with other detectors in the past.

Very cool finds! You will come to notice if you haven't already that the deus picks up the tiny things. They can be a sonofableep to find in loose dirt too!

Call me crazy but the 1 piece you are in question about looks like what remains of a flint lock plate.

Nice finds, CW (Coin Whisperer, not Civil War <g>)

I see your PAL bale seal. AKA baggage seals, also used on box car doors as I understand it.
PAL = Piedmont Air Line - a 48 mile addition to the Richmond & Danville RR that ran from Danville to Greensboro completed in 1864.

I researched PAL after finding two of the seals in a confederate camp I am working, and found this:
