I took my etrac on the flight I'm on right now. Packed the poles in my check-in, kept the unit and batteries with me. TSA came over and asked me what the heck was that thing but then immediately figured out it was a metal detector. Let me right through without any problem!

I'm off to Boston this evening, but in light of recent events, my detector goes in the cargo hold;)

If you value your detector, I would keep it with you. I've seen a lot of bags get thrown around when being loaded or unloaded from the plane. Just make sure you pack your batteries with it (no Lithium) so that you can prove it works if they ask.
