Digging through storage for my past finds and a long search for my first silver dime lead me to find many things I'd forgotten. One of which was issues to a past subscription to Lost Treasure. Looking online to subscribe I found the publication ceased in 2018. Of course the link had plenty of gloom and doom about things to come, which has always been the m.o. for anything.

I did find W&E (Western & Eastern Treasures) still going somewhat, it appears they are digital subscriptions only. I got a subscription anyway for $12 a year on the Memorial Day sale and is a excuse to blow the dust from my Kindle tablet, recharge the battery, and read it as close to a print copy as I can.

Are there any other related magazines around in the USA? I've seen a few in the UK but with the high price and importing something I skipped for now.

Thanks for the tip on W&E. The Memorial sale is still valid $12 for a year digital. I subbed.

American Digger.

Thanks I'll have to check them out too.

Your welcome, glad it worked for you too.

So far I've glanced through a few, but the real deal is the past issues to 2009 are available too for any subscriber. I think I'll be busy for awhile catching up.

Ever since the introduction and explosion of the internet (late 1990s and early 2000s) printed media has suffered. No one buys magazines, no one gets phone books, no one buys encyclopedias, etc.....

So too did brick and mortar md'ing clubs suffer and die: No one gets their socializing by driving to a 1x per month club meeting anymore. We do it from the comfort of our lazy boy recliner at home.

These evil computers destroyed everything ! (oops, I just used a 'puter to say that. Did I contradict myself :?:  )

Yup. But the poor fellows who made phone books, md'ing magazines, porno mags, encyclopedias, etc.... are now out of a job. How could you have been so cruel ?

I made my kids watch Back to the Future recently. When Marty rips the page with Doc Brown's address on it from the phone book in the phone booth, they were totally lost. When I explained it, they were equally flabbergasted.

Not many MDing magazines around anymore. Most have bit the dust and/or gone digital.

Most of those old paper mags were mostly ads or recycled "buried treasure" stories which served to get one's juices flowing to buy a metal detector.

I do occasionally listen to some of those MD podcasts on Spreaker , but most of those are hit and miss also.

Oh man , you are making me feel OLD. And you too must be "on the ugly side of 50" if you remember phone books ! And maybe you're even old enough to remember pagers ? Sssshheeesk.

Heck, I saved a lot of money at the company I own when I stopped having a little picture ad and text (which they charge you monthly for, to have in the yellow pages). I pointed out the salesperson that NO ONE USES THE YELLOW PAGES anymore to find a service provider of any given service, in a given geographical area. They use the INTERNET. And my website costs me $50 per year. So why the heck would I pay $100 per month for an informational portal that no one uses ? DOH !

Oh my gosh, you're dating yourself too.

Do you mean all those "lost mine" and "buried loot" stories WEREN'T TRUE ? SAY IT ISN'T SO ! After all, they all contained a faded newspaper clipping and an artist depiction of the miner posed next to his burro. Therefore, IT HAD TO BE TRUE !

They were good at showcasing for "much needed upgrades". The W&E is great and will keep me busy for awhile.

I will have to check into the podcasts, thanks for the details. I have found one on there so far and they released a new episode today so it is active.

There is one positive to it all, the loss of publicity of the hobby in the public spotlight. That in itself is good for more finds left, less Karen's worrying about the hobby, and more time spent out in the field. HH

Good call out. Looks like the sale ends tonight for W&E and the digital mags come out monthly.

I too miss the days of reading paperback mags like Popular Mechanics and Popular Science. Most of the mags now are bi-monthly instead of each month, so only 6 per year.

I guess they kept the monthly schedule but went digital only - between a switch to bi-monthly or digital I think I prefer their choice. Overall there appear to be two related magazines left in the USA in some form, W&E and American Digger, and several overseas.

I had both Popular Mechanics and Popular Science until recently actually. Between the growing price, bi-monthly issues, and less content (more ads) I grudgingly let my subscriptions expire. The magazines more recently seemed like the cable channels Discovery and TLC (The Learning Channel...) that both abandoned their namesakes and formats.

I know there are plenty of the typical celebrity gossip magazines left and printing just as frequently as ever, and found in stores. My wife still gets People weekly and others in the mail, and a few others occasionally waiting in a checkout line.

Lost Treasure got my cash , renewed, only recieved 2 months  That being said never again on any subs.

Sorry it happened to you as well. I read many others had it happen too and no refund or anything in sight. Definitely not a positive way to end many years of a relationship.

The last print magazine I have left is MAD magazine, I resubscribed for another 2 years even with their recent changes. However I am beginning to wonder if they are still printing - with a bi-monthly print cycle, and likely missing a issue between resubscribing, I won't know for sure until a few more months pass.

I have a digital subscription to American Digger.

Also there is a FREE digital subscription for Dirt Digest Magazine. This use to be like 4 pages, but now the current periodical was over 40 pages.

Thanks alot Tom. You just killed my childhood buzz.:(

yes! there is american digger. it is expensive 38.00 a year. meant to subscribe
before and finally did it! got a 1 year sub...i am not thrilled as i was loyal to western & eastern for a very long time. i cannot do digital,so i took a chance and got the american digger be forewarned, as american digger focuses on relic hunting and the civil war. i am a coin shooter mainly so i find it just so-so nothing special, and did i mention?..it's expensive.. they certainly are not giving it away!
it IS printed on a very heavy 'glossy" paper, which i am sure is costly for them, but still, its bi-monthly and not monthly! so you have to decide if you really want to take a chance! i do like their "finds" area which has 4 pages of content! i'm just sayin'

(h.h.!)

I never could read all those old "treasure" magazines, mostly just a bunch of ridiculous stories about treasures that were never there in the first place. I will admit to buying the thicker "Treasure Hunter's Yearbooks" for a few years though largely because I got written up in the 1975 edition. The yearbook was more focused on what had been found during the year rather than unfounded stories of treasures waiting to be found.
