How many of you hunt in " All Metal " and switch back and forth to " Disc " ?

When testing the Ultimate I tried it for the first time and to say that I was impressed with the depth would be an understatement. It was just a pain in the butt switching back and forth.

Craig pointed out that is the reason a lot of guys carry the control box around their neck. I don't care for that method of carrying the box and like it on the rod.

Has anyone ever done a pinpoint mod on the GT, like OBN does on the Excalibur ?

Ive not seen one.....but then MOST ive talked to feel the Sov is deeper using disc than PP. BUT.... this new coil may well have changed that. Ive not tested it.... the few times i used it in PP i personally didnt like the way it functioned. Im sure its because i didnt use it long enough. I know like the Xcal you can crank its sensitivity up well beyond disc mode..... that may well make the difference as well.... id think it would.

What i found about PP with the Xcal is on gold in it gives a true weaker signal than in disc. Disc may not see the target.... pp does, BUT you might just miss the low disc signal.

At 67, it's hard for me to change old habits, ( sometime even if things are better ) . This may be one of those times that I do, or at the very least try it out.

It may be a pain in the aze but if it puts gold in my scoop that I wouldn't have had otherwise, I may just use it more often.

The difference is so dramatic, ( for me ), that I have to give it a try on my other GT coils.

The 8" Tornado ( 7 1/2" ) may be a good coil to try it on because when I had a deeeep hole I couldn't get the Ultimate into the bottom of the hole but the 8" coil I could.

If you decide to give it a try, please let us know the results.

To go along with this..... has anyone noticed there were only 2 Sov for sale on free bay? A total of 24 items for the Sov.... stuffs drying up fast or tis the season for winter beach hunters to be using them. Tells me if you are going to grab up some of the Sov stuff like the 13" you best get to looking.

Mel Parker did it. Others have too. I use WOT and hunt in disc. Couple hunts back when the black sand was close to the surface I was finding stuff real deep with it. With the right amount of time an effort, you could put on in. Its something I might do as a winter project. Keep us updated if you do it. hh an gl -Joe

All the times that I have run in all metal I could still get the target when I switch to disc so I normally run in disc all the time unless I am not getting anything. Then I will run in all metal just to be getting a target (hello bobbie pins) but other than that I run in disc all the time.

I don't know if their is a difference in other coils because I am running the one that came with the machine. I am waiting on the SEF 12x10 coil now to give it a try.

The places I hunt with my GT it is deeper than PP mode... I don't plan on changing the way I hunt.. why should I?

Being we hunt some of the same places it may not work there for me either.

No one is asking you to change or expecting you to, I was just asking if anyone does hunt in that mode and what they think of it. :snapoutofit:

My Sovereign seems to be just as deep in disc mode as all metal. It's a pain switching back and forth, not to mention the switch will go bad one day... so I'm happy to leave it in disc 100% of the time. :D

like Craig

Said Frank, I use all metal 95% of the time, in my opinion , and manufacturer's opinion, all metal is always DEEPER, the only time I will run disc , is high trash ,and iron, when the pier partly got washed away in Ocean City I had my Df out, at that point of time, I wished I had my Excal running in disc mode, the nails, at different depth from the pier killed me, run pp mode with that new coil ,learn to like digging all , at 67 it will be like taking a shot of Viagra :lol: howboutit

I like your analogy Earl.

It totally depends on the amount of targets in the area I am hunting. If that part of the beach is bleak, I use PP mode because switching does not really slow you down much and you need any extra depth you can get. If there are more numerous targets then I run disc. Now, I am NO expert and am learning, so take this with caution. During my testing and practice I find that only a small percentage of targets did not register in disc. I am guessing about 3%. So, 3 out of 100 targets is not many so how much am I slowing down?

The old timers swear by PP mode depending on the beach. Beaches with rocks with little sand probably don't need that. It is easy hunting in disc. PP is a different animal and you have to listen really close. You have to know how to setup the machine, it is different than just running as high as you can without false signals. It seems a lower sens setting is preferred, NOT a high setting. ??? Running a high setting drowns out deep targets due to the coil picking up back round noise. ??? It is all a mystery to me still but I keep trying. I have yet to find any gold using PP mode but it will happen some day.

Here is a great read about PP hunting from another site. You might be surprised at some of the instructions. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?21,1971504,1971504#msg-1971504

There are mods for the Sov to add a PP button. I just chest mount with a photo harness so switching is fast and easy. I would much rather have one on my Excal.

How many gold have you found again this year Earl?

All metal is not deeper but keep telling yourself that if you so choose... where I hunt disc is deeper...

On the V3i there is something called Mixed Mode, which is disc and all metal running at the same time. When you go over a target you hear the threshold ramp up giving a VCO tone, then a half second later the disc mode gives the appropriate tone. The all metal part is obviously an inch or 2 deeper, because there will be targets that give a VCO tone, but don't give a disc tone.

The Sovereign in Disc mode seems to run in a similar fashion, but with the all metal and disc merged together in a much more pleasant way.

If no one else noticed, I did. I've also seen the price jump $150 on Kellyco... hoping it's the holiday price hike.

On page 21 of my owners manual it says and I quote; "Note: You should not search in Pinpoint as the ground balance is disabled and the detector can become erratic."

So for those that run your gt in pp how are you able to do this without the machine becoming unusable?

Was this a change in the models that were produced later, like the one I purchased in December 2012?

All my tests were in Disc/Fix and All Metal/Track which is the only mode track works in...from my understanding.

When I hunt in Disc, I turn my machine on, set it to AM/Track, ground balance, then set to Disc/ Fix while the coil is still on the ground.

I didn't think you had to ground balance when hunting in disc. I hunt in disc and with track on. Maybe I should start ground balancing. I normally do if I run in all metal mode for a long time. If I am just doing a quick check of an area to see if I missed anything while in disc I don't ground balance.
