I found this in Montana, in a park that dates to 1902. I read a story once that US Calvary regiments may have camped in the area but I know nothing of buttons. My research indicates that this is a naval button? Not sure how this makes any sense so maybe it is a replica. Any insight is helpful. Thanks for looking!

Navy button. 1850-1865

Agreed. I think you've got yourself a Civil War era button. Details of note: Eagle facing right. Fluke of anchor behind eagle's wing.

Backmark details exactly match one of that period's several variations:

SCOVILL Mfg Co. WATERBURY CT. : 1850-1865

That's a real beauty. Congrats on a very good find.

Thanks everyone , But a 1850-1865 navy button in Montana? I am along way from any ocean and if this what it appears to be, how in the world did it end up buried in Montana? Did the US Calvary uniforms back in that time use these buttons? Maybe it was brought here by a veteran of the Civil War that settled out west after it was over.
On another note, I also found a 45-70 casing here this past summer that possibly dates back to the era of the trapdoor Springfield. I chalked that up to an anomaly- now I'm not so sure. If I can find it , I will post a pic.

After the Civil War folks moved all over this nation. It could easily have been On a Naval Uniform and the wearer moved west. If memory serves correctly that was a Naval Officers Vest Button
