In Dallas and have never done this. Any suggestions of where to start? Local shops, groups etc?

I believe there is a local club in Dallas, Lone Star Treasure Hunters if I remember correctly, also a store over in North Richland Hills that sells metal detectors, they may be some help, at least you can look at the detectors and get a feel for what you want, if you want an honest answer on a detector and some one who stands behind what he sells, ask Tony on this forum ...............
