Had a good day with my brother yesterday. We drove to a few spots to hunt mushrooms. We managed a fair amount of morels and some saddlehorns. Then we scratched around an old farm dump in the woods. The nest of eggs were from a turkey that startled me good, when she suddenly bolted from about 5 feet away.

Does it get any better than that? Morels, sheds and bottles all in one day?

Any markings on that bell you found? Always looking for bells from my town (belltown, east Hampton ct)

Not a mark on it. Cleaned up nice, though!
The antlers weren't found sheds...at least not recently. We used those for "scratch digging" for bottles. Worked pretty good, and haven't broke any glass with them yet.

Great finds, all of them. What were they thinking to throw away a nice bell like that... I like the fourth bottle in, the fourth after the milks. Sounds like a fun day for you with a big feast afterwards!

Heck yeah, that's a good day! What in the world is a saddlehorn???

Thanks. Saddlehorn is a common name for "Dryad's Saddle" mushrooms; also called "pheasant backs" They can get big, but the young ones, shaped kind of like a saddlehorn, are best for eating. Here's a pic of some huge ones I saw that day...

Thanks. Not sure what that one is. He said it had some dude's face on it. I don't think it was Old Quaker, but maybe. Here's another view...

Old Quaker? Well...that just reminded me of my very first ever bottle dump dig and my joy at finding Old Mr. Boston. Yes, Mr. Boston has lost his place in the display for other stuff, but he is still very close to my heart...

Guarantee Mr. Boston could take Old Quaker.

Are you sure that’s a bell and not a candle snuffer? I’ve dug those before, but there’s never a clapper inside.

Very nice assortment of finds!

Cool adventure you had and some neat stuff

Thanks. Could be a snuffer I guess. Sure seems like a bell, but whaddo I know? I just learned how to spell "Conestoga" :D

Usually because the clapper was connected to the roof of the bell with an iron wire or rod, which rusts away when buried for decades.
