It was suggested that as I am not intending to do any more metal detecting, I should post more of my photos from here in the UK.
I only consider myself an amateur photographer, but I enjoy what I do.

I recently tried some sports photography, after some ladies invited me to take
some photos of them playing hockey. How could I refuse ? :)
This is one of many I took.

Neat shot, it draws your focus to where their focus is - on the hockey ball.

Another neat shot would be to try to catch the emotion on their face at the second they first realize they scored a goal.

I have tried, but it's not that easy. It's a very fast game.

This may be what you are referring to. ? It's from a 1st team game

I plan on getting a new camera very soon, along with a new telephoto lens.

Hey, that's pretty good Alan !

You caught the emotion of joy from the victory of a successful goal.

Sometimes what helps with quick action situations is if you can set the camera on a mode where it takes several shots rapidly in succession with just one push of the button, then check thru those shots to see which one catches just the right moment best.

Yep, that's what I do. My D3300 lets me take 6fps
I'm shortly going to buy a D500, which goes to 10fps. With a buffer that
will handle 200 shots on an XQD card. Not that it's something you'd do too often :)

I've learnt a lot from watching Jarred Polin and Mike Browne Youtube videos.
I met Mike Browne at a seminar in London, he explains things very well.

One of his older ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzXNNF8zTDQ&list=PLK_Zcfk6vANQsfwq3YREhm1LbjX-Y6MOF

Wow, 10 fps should be plenty !

yep, 200 shots at a time would likely not happen too often, would need to be a really special event or situation.

Thanks for sharing that video link. I'll have to check it out.

I just checked out the D500 at the Nikonusa web site and that is one very nice camera !

....from that page -

20.9MP DX format CMOS sensor without Optical Low Pass Filter & EXPEED 5 image processor
Multi-CAM 20K Autofocus sensor with 153/99 AF points
ISO range of 100-51,200 expandable to Lo 1 and Hi 5 (50 – 1,640,000 equivalent)
Share images instantly with built-in SnapBridge (Wi-Fi® + Bluetooth) capabilities
Shoot cinematic 4K UHD video
Dual card slots - XQD and SD media

......now I really know my Lumia 1520 smartphone has a good camera (for a smartphone anyhow), it has a 20MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics.

I bought the D500 along with the 200-500mm zoom lens and 1.4TC just after
Christmas, and have just bought the vertical grip.
It was quite an investment for me, but as it's my main hobby now I thought
"what the heck".

I lost my father 10 days before Christmas, and when something like that
happens, it makes you put life into perspective. There's no point going
through life thinking "I wish I'd done this or that". You end up getting to an
age when you have plenty of money in the bank, but nothing left to spend it
on.

Cool photo..... (Hockey is different over here. No ball, just a puck. And the players are missing teeth....)

Congrats on the D500 and equipment Alan !

You are right about not waiting till you are too old to enjoy your hobbies, I realize some people might not be able to retire as soon as they'd like, but it's nice when you can retire young enough to still enjoy many active retirement years.

nice shots! sorry, missed a few threads -- why hanging it up/

It's just not something I was getting enjoyment from anymore. For the last two
or three years it was only rallies I was going to. These were turning out to be
mostly social events, going over ground detected on countless times before. I
made some good friends, and also met a few rogues.
I know that at 65yo (66 in Feb), I hopefully still have many good years in
front of me, but it was getting to the stage where I kept thinking "...what
the hell am I doing out here ? ..."

lol! I hear ya. Sad to see such an active member go, on the one hand, but on the other hand, again, NICE pictures!

I'm an amateur shutterbug, myself, but just do it for fun. :)

I don't think Alan is leaving the forum, just metal detecting, as this part of the forum "Family Friendly Topics" is open for non-metal detecting threads too, so we can hope he'll still visit the forum and share some of his photos occasionally.

Love the picture, although he doesn't look happy :)

Yes I'll stay and put a few pictures up now and again. On reflection it would be a shame to leave here completely, as it is what it says.

A friendly forum :thumbsup::cheer:

Absolutely! Here's one I took recently of Buster the bulldog:

lol, maybe ya can't embed Flickr photos. Anyhow, here: https://flic.kr/p/QCbW61

Neat picture !!! He looks a little puzzled like what's going on :?:

.....pictures like that beg for a caption, maybe something like "I AM smiling !" :D or maybe "I hope I get a treat after posing for this !" m0223.gif

That's great Alan !

You could even start a separate thread in this section ("Family Friendly Topics") just for your photos, maybe title it something like "My photography from S.E. England" or something like that. :photo:
