I mapped out 4-5 homesteads that I know about from my youthful days of arrowhead hunting, all of them 1860's-70's locations. To get there I had to take a long 4wd route that passes through a logging camp from the same time period. I found the axe head at the logging camp then journeyed onward to location 2. I figured out location 2 lasted into the 1900's. Some of the remaining wood debris had round and square nails in it. The nail bed where I believe the home stood was so thick that the coil nulled out high conductors on the surface. It's a place I will be going back to with a rake and a magnet. I found the mercury dime at location 2 laying on the surface in very soft soil. Probably kicked up by wild horses. Location 3 was interesting, the home was on the side of a hill I found high conductors, clock parts, broken spoon, and the smallest horseshoe I've ever found. Must have been made for a foal. I will be going back here also and possibly screening out the 8x10 floor. It was full of sediment from the hillside. Location 4 I found some surface buttons, chain from a horse or oxen team and some type of high conductor. The short winter day meant rapid searches. I will do more in-depth detecting in the spring.
