The Joy of Cleaning Wheaties

I went out curb stripping for a couple hours earlier this week - didn’t find any silver, but I did manage to grab 7 Wheaties along with $1.45 in clad. As I’ve mentioned in some other threads, I actually enjoy cleaning my Wheats by hand - I find it surprisingly enjoyable and sort of therapeutic...plus it gives me good practice for cleaning more significant copper/brass finds (large cents, tokens, IHPs, etc).

But the real treasure lately: my 4 year old daughter has suddenly taken a great interest in helping me “clean my pennies” :D She says she like likes to “scratch on the pennies and make the little words show up” She absolutely loves it, and I get a kick out of her enthusiasm :grin:

Plus, she’s getting pretty good at it! Here’s some shots of her cleaning up a 1928 Wheatie using toothpicks, Andre’s pencils, and some 0000 steel wool. The first shot of the Wheatie is after her efforts...she even got some of the black oxidation off! The last shot is after I finished the job for her...I think we make a pretty good Pennie cleaning tag team! ;)

I know I'm going to make some one mad, but im leaning towards throwing them in my tumbler.

What a great story, you turned those wheaties into priceless treasure!

When you dig a quarter thousand or more every season, that’s the most efficient way to clean, tumbling.

Too funny! Looks like she's having a blast helping Dad.

She really was thrilled, and I sure loved every minute of it!

Thanks, marcomo! That smile and enthusiasm makes me want to dig a Wheatie out of every plug!!

Precious and the cleaned wheat looks great.

Thanks waltr! She’ll be an expert “finds restoration specialist” in no time

I just got done tumbling a bunch of clad earlier this evening, and discovered a 1940 Canadian cent that accidently got put through the tumbler - it looks absolutely fantastic!! If Wheaties come out similar, I may have to teach my daughter how to run the tumbler, instead

How fun! What special memories the two of you are making together. Congrats on the finds!

I've always just tumbled my wheat pennies. They come out looking pretty nice, but they kind of have a purplish color to them for some reason? I just use water and aquarium gravel for a few hours.

I love wheat pennies!!! Lol I have a place I keep my silver, and a place I keep all of my Wheaties!!! I's awesome your daughter is jumping in and helping!!!

Airmet, next step for your little numismatist: the blue whitman penny folder!

She may or may not be interested in collecting the different dates, but if she is she'll be hooked on detecting for many years...or at least until that awkward age where she starts getting interested in a different kind of "dates"

:thumbsup:Nice to see that she enjoys spending so much time with her dad and helping him with his hobby.
