Today was military day. I didn't realize that until I cleaned things up after I got home. I was very happy finding that the button on the left actually had an Eagle on it. In the same hole with the domed cap I also found what I thought to be a flat button. After cleaning I noticed the flat button has GILT EXTRA STRONG on the back side. With a little effort I think I could snap the two together. The ornate dome has an Eagle holding a claw with 4 Arrows and Olive branch in the other. The shield on the Eagle's breast has vertical stripes. The perimeter of the button is adorned with stars. The second button was a true suprise. After cleaning and in some oblique light I noticed a spread Eagle embossed on the crumpled face of the button. Both buttons have the eagle facing it's right however this eagle has the arrows in it's left claw and branch in the right claw. There is a small heart shaped shield on the Eagle's breast with a Letter "I" or "T". in the shield. The back of the button has (Looks Like) SCOVILLs then WA_ _ P_ _ _ _. Can someone point me in the right direction for researching?

:digginahole:

Both look CW to me. The first looks like a general service button and the second looks like an I or infantry button.

The button with the I is an infantry button... the other is a staff officer button. Probably civil war era.

Want me to tell you where to research it, or tell you what you got??

The backmark should read "Scovill Waterbury Button Co." or something to that effect. And It's an "I" in the shield. It's 2 piece construction. You've got a Civil War Infantry eagle button. Super find my friend!

But the other is AWESOME! It's a Civil War Union Staff Officer's button. That's actually a 3 piece button, and a lot less common. I've yet to find one. Nice job!

Here's a few good button sites:

If you're really into military buttons after this, I highly recommend this book:

Fantastic on Everyones part

Thank you all for the responses and direction. Been turning up a lot of CW finds in the area. Love knowing about what I dig, puts history right in my hands, can almost hear the cannon fire when I dig a find, ......or was that thunder
:wow2:

Definitely Civil War!! I found a button just like the one with the Eagle on it --but it was nowhere near the shape of yours!!! That AT Pro you got is a relic finding machine :wow:

Pro mode is noisey, and slow. Takes me a week to cover what you do in a day on STD Coin. For retired people like me, there's always " I'll do it again tomorrow.... Unless I go riding .
