Hello everyone, I've had a Garrett ace 350 for a few years but just used it for the first time a week ago behind my house in the woods. I've used it at the beach and that's a different story. There the thing seemed to ring with a different tone with every step I took. A quick history, I live in Ulster County, NY, surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of acres of woods. Supposedly at one time it was farmed but not later than 1900. Judging by the size of the trees I'd bet that's a good timeline. It is currently an mainly oak forest with some of the trees 20-30 inches in diameter. Of most interest to me is setting up a timeline. I've found a bunch of nails which I was surprised can help a lot just based on their heads. Did i find an old musket ball about six inches down? i know the Hudson valley is rich in military history. I found a small can with no holes and sealed. Something is shaking around in it not a coin or anything but should i open it or just leave it as is to spare myself the disappointment. It was about a foot down under a large root of a tree that I'm sure wasn't there when it was placed/dropped there. Also found what I'm assuming is a old pewter cow bell as the bell itself is in pretty good shape but the rest of the metal is really rusted. Also a belt buckle probably also pewter. Thank you to anyone who can help with setting up a timeline or a place to start. Also the little ball is very heavy for it's size that's why I was so excited when i dug it.

I'de open it, just cause i cant stand not knowing. The buckle looks to have been silver plated brass. The bell was probably a tombac type of material, but its hard to tell from just looking at it. and if i had to guess somehwere around a .69 cal ball? hard to say without calipers

Yes that is a lead musket ball, dropped not fired. Could have been dropped hunting. I love finding them!

Damn straight you better open that thing..

does it sound like something metal inside or just makes a dull sound?

I have had that situation before but ended up being water but you HAVE to open it.. use a mask though could contain the black death

seriously open it.. now.. we want to know.

oh and cool other finds

Open and send pics please

We are dying to know you never know nothing ventured nothing gained🤔

Update

I opened the can and there was a decent amount of something that had the consistency of sand and color of rust. Heavier than dirt with no discernible smell
