Are there different styles, eg: some pinpointers "detect" directly out the tip where as others detect 360 around the tip?

yes, Garret Carrot detects 360 around the tip. Whites TRX detects in a cone off the tip. Some think it makes it easier to find targets in the sidewall of your hole.

Actually, the TRX protects a flashlight beam off of the tip, which gives some side detection around the sides of the tip. Sweeping the tip on the sidewalls adds too much time for me. I carry both pointers, I first surface detect with the TRX after coil pinpoint, when the detector says 3-4 inches.The flashlight beam and depth of nearly 5 inches, to detect right before quitting a hole. It's paid off!
I'll choose to take the Carrot if I had only one pinpointer though. I have both, so best of both worlds IMPO.
